With mysteries more elaborate and impactful, Danganronpa 2 is a masterfully crafted story that sets the stage for some challenging puzzles of logic and deduction.
There are things to dislike about Danganronpa 2, whether that be the noticeably cheap localization, plot elements that feel rather mean spirited in 2021, or even the existence of Nagito Komaeda. However I found that the game’s eccentric cast, banging soundtrack from series composer Masafumi Takada, and generally interesting and intricate murder mysteries burst through any problems those aspects might have caused. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is a satisfying sequel that’s a fun ride despite being too similar to the original, suffering from inconsistent pacing, and overstaying its welcome.
In the end, it all comes together in a most delightful way. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is an accomplished amalgam of storytelling, character interaction, and deduction – plus, a macabre attitude that isn’t afraid to show its true colors. It’s just as bizarre and engaging as its predecessor — and in an age where sequels often crash and burn, that’s reason enough to say goodbye to despair.
A great experience for fans of the series that finally makes it way to the west.
A worthy successor to an already great game. Danganronpa‘s mysteries will keep you hooked and the logic puzzles will have you at your wit’s end. If anything, the game’s mini-games may prove to be a bit annoying at first and the game doesn’t exactly do a good job with teaching them to you. Overall, a must-buy for fans of the first game.
Although returning fans will get more out of Danganronpa 2, bar the occasional reference, there are no barriers obstructing those yet to play the series. Still, Goodbye Despair isn’t a game for everyone, especially those who crave action and non-stop thrills. The sheer amount of dialogue to wade through requires patience and concentration yet those committed enough to see it through will be justly rewarded.
She doesn’t succeed with that attempt, however. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is every bit the worthy sequel to one of my favourite games ever created. Smart ideas paired up with smart writing and an enthralling mystery make for another true game of the year contender.
