Hatoful Boyfriend has a strange premise, and though it embraces that weirdness fully, it is able to surpass the label of silly dating sim by presenting interesting themes and characters through strong writing. Though it has some pacing issues and a seemingly useless upgrade system, the funny, meaningful stories had me reading right past them.
Hatoful Boyfriend is not the pigeon-dating sim you're looking for: It's more than that. Curb your enthusiasm for branching storylines after playing through the early romance portion of the story. After you cross the point of no return, the game is out of your hands, and you're left with an on-rails storyline progression. Regardless, it will subvert each and every one of your preconceived notions of what Hatoful Boyfriend could even remotely be about.
Want to roleplay as a the lone human girl in a city full of would be suitors? What if all those suitors were birds? No, I’m not talking about someone’s freaky weekend fantasy, I’m talking about Hatoful Boyfriend – the weirdest damn thing I’ve ever played.
Even if visual novels aren’t your thing, I’d hasten to recommend Hatoful Boyfriend. It’s a cleverly-written game, with surprises lurking under its pink and fuzzy surface ready to reward players for investing their time. Whilst some people may get bored having to replay the same segments multiple times, those willing to persevere will surely be pleasantly surprised by the breadth of content hidden under its bizarre surface.
Hatoful Boyfriend is a delightfully crazy game (just so long as you stay away from the epilogue).
Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you're a fan of absurd stories, off-the-wall humor, and dating simulators. Playing Hatoful Boyfriend isn't really playing so much as it is reading and making a few decisions on what you think your date might like you to say. If you enjoy things like Goat Simulator for the mere absurdity of their existence, there's enjoyment to be had in Hatoful Boyfriend's bird puns, but it's certainly not for everybirdie.
