We’ve seen a surge in games featuring arts and crafts visuals over the past few years. This is partially because of Sony’s LittleBigPlanet, but mostly due to Nintendo’s decision to release a ton of Yoshi and Kirby games with this art style. Between Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Yoshi’s Wooly World, Link’s Awakening, and Yoshi’s Crafted World, it was only a matter of time until an indie developer decided to give a shot. Woven is this kind of game.

Woven is not a fun game, but it’s certainly a nice story. There are concepts —particularly the body-swapping mechanic— that could have been enjoyable with the right execution, but this game doesn’t even come close to pulling them off.

Woven could have been a welcome addition to the family friendly game catalogue, but the finished game just lacks any kind of polish or fun. The controls are unresponsive, the design decisions at odds with the presumed audience, and the few moments of interest lost in a sea of mediocrity and meandering backtracking. Unfortunately, Woven is just knit very good.

Verdict: Woven has a lot of charm. It’s written in poetic prose reminiscent of Dr. Seuss, which is just perfect tonally and for the setting. These charming words really bring the artistic design to life, and the yarn textures and stitches in the environment really sell it. However, that’s about all Woven has going for it. At times, it feels juvenile and empty while unclear controls and actions add a sense of frustration. Despite the writing and artistic design having so much life, Woven, ultimately, feels a little flat.
