I don't know exactly how to talk about Yurukill: The Calumniation Games. It does so much, and caught me so completely off guard, that any approach to summarizing it seems inaccurate. The only thing I can say with certainty is that I really enjoyed playing it.Read More
If you've ever wondered what a murder mystery shoot 'em up would be like then look no further than Yurukill: The Calumniation Games.
While not up to the level of its inspirations, Yurukill: The Calumniation Games is an enjoyable visual novel that does an excellent job of merging its storytelling with shoot 'em up gameplay.
When I first saw a trailer for Yurukill: The Calumniation Games, I was intrigued. It reminded me of Danganronpa, thanks to the atmosphere it was trying to convey. The aesthetic had me glued. Upon seeing the title, my hopes were raised as I assumed murder was on the menu. Then, subsequent marketing did nothing to quell those inferences, and so, it was full steam ahead. I have countless fond memories of playing these sorts of adventures. My plate was full of games to cover, though, and I begrud...
And yet, you really can’t separate them because Yurukill: The Calumniation Games is greater than the sum of its parts. The bullet hell sections are fun and challenging if a bit drab in design and variety while the escape room sections have good character interactions but are far too simple and tame for what you might expect in a game about an amusement park where people can be murdered with the push of a button. Tear them apart and you get two substandard games that likely wouldn’t be worth anybody’s time. Keep them together, however, and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind experience that’s worth chec...
Yurukill: The Calumniation Games is certainly an oddity, but it’s not without its charm. It definitely shares some characteristics with the Zero Escape and Danganronpa games, even if it doesn’t quite hit the same highs. The shoot-’em-up sections are enjoyable, but like other aspects of the overall game, they drag on a bit too long. A bit more time in the editing room would be a worthwhile prison sentence for Binko and the rest of the cast. While there’s not much in the way of unlockable content, you can replay any shooter stage you’ve cleared in the story and earn your place on the…
Yurukill is odd combination of genres that works surprisingly well but is hamstrung by a lack of depth and short length.
It’s always cool to see a developer attempt something new. There are so many games that stick to tried and true formulas, following the trends and making a game that will appease the broadest demographic. However, there’s always fun to be had when a game dev team tries something weird. Yurukill: The Calumniation Games is something weird. It’s a mash-up of a familiar visual novel style game with minimal puzzle elements and choice mechanics, and higher stakes moments taking place in a sho...
“Yurukill: The Calumniation Games can't quite find the right narrative justification for its intriguing gameplay hooks.”
