Zero Escape: The Nonary Games Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is a perfect addition to any visual novel fan's collection. Both games are truly a work of art that combine mystery and horror to tell a story that is so gripping that it's almost impossible to put down. The only thing missing is the inclusion of the third entry of the series, Zero Time Dilemma.

The maniacal mastermind known as Zero has created extremely elaborate games that are meant to result in death. There's a way out, but it'll take some deep thinking and some untimely demises of the other participants. Get ready for some mind boggling twists and turns in this double feature. Everything you need to know about the game can be found right here!

Ultimately, however, Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is more of the same from Spike-Chunsoft, which is not a bad thing at all. The games are still engaging, fun, and in the case of Virtue’s Last Reward, have some of the most challenging puzzles in the visual novel genre. Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is an above-average compilation that offers just enough changes to make it a good purchase for both newcomers to the series and franchise veterans, although, as always with this genre, those looking for action had best look elsewhere.

If I sound like I didn’t enjoy Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, I don’t mean to. The puzzles really are great and worth experiencing. If you care about the story, there is plenty of it in both games to enjoy. Playing these games on the go, in bite-size chunks is the most recommended way to play them. If you can handle overwrought voice acting, some nasty characters, and thin writing, you’ll enjoy the story. For fans of puzzles, thankfully there is a fast skip button that allows you to skip the overly talky bits and get to the real shining star in these games.
