Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Earlier this year, Guerrilla Games showed the world how engaging single player games are made with Horizon Zero Dawn, with an open world experience that has been masterfully crafted to give players a playground where it's very hard to feel bored. With Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds DLC, the team has now shown how an expansion should be done.
May it be the likes of Shadow of the Colossus or Metal Gear Solid, if it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of our favourite games of 2017 and developers Guerrilla Games have just released the highly anticipated DLC for this title called The
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds offers more of what I loved in the base game. There's an amazing new location, fantastic story and gameplay which continues to be fun. Thanks to the new locales, and expanded colours that feature in the world, the game looks more stunning than ever. If you enjoyed the base game, you will love what is on offer here. The Frozen Wilds is a fantastic victory lap on the way to a well deserved sequel.
Oddly enough, Horizon: Zero Dawn was a game I initially had trouble getting invested in. At its top level it had all the ingredients of something I would love — strong female protagonist, a post-apocalyptic wasteland, robot dinosaurs and the hunting thereof — and yet I did not immediately click with the game. I took some time away from it to play myriad other titles that dropped in the weeks after Horizon’s release, and then finally returned.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best games I've ever played, and frankly, one of the best looking video games ever crafted. Its combat was fast, ferocious, and made even more impressive due to its robotic cast of creatures that you could literally dismember with a well-placed arrow or set up traps t
In what is easily one of the best expansions of the year, Guerrilla Games gave us an interesting new story arc, some great new characters, and most importantly a reason to revisit a game that was probably shelved months ago for most gamers because there is literally too much good stuff this year.
Horizon Zero Dawn's first and final expansion sees our beloved Aloy heading into an unforgiving new land to fight a rising menace.
Review republished on 20th April, 2021: With Horizon Zero Dawn primed to be offered for free as part of Sony's Play At Home initiative, we're bringing our original review back from the archives.
A generous expansion that through its stunning visuals and inspired creature design showcases the best features of the original, even if it doesn’t fix many of its flaws.
Aloy has returned to Gorilla Games’ smash hit, Horizon Zero Dawn, with the release of the games first expansion, The Frozen Wilds. Not only is she back but she’s reminding everyone exactly why we fell in love with her and this game in the first place. There’s no denying that Horizon Zero Dawn captured gamer’s hearts and blew critics away when it first released with its beautifully designed and expansive open world. Not to mention a strong female protagonist and a diverse supporting c...
In fact, the most generous reading of The Frozen Wilds is not as a prequel or sequel, but as a collection of missing missions. I suspect those who skipped Horizon earlier this year and find time this holiday to play the game with The Frozen Wilds interwoven into the campaign will enjoy the offering more than those of us returning nine months later. They won’t have to relearn the controls, the value of so many items or the names of tribes and their leaders. The Cut will be just another beautiful stop in Aloy’s spectacular adventure.
