Oddly enough, Horizon: Zero Dawn was a game I initially had trouble getting invested in. At its top level it had all the ingredients of something I would love — strong female protagonist, a post-apocalyptic wasteland, robot dinosaurs and the hunting thereof — and yet I did not immediately click with the game. I took some time away from it to play myriad other titles that dropped in the weeks after Horizon’s release, and then finally returned.

Earlier this year, Guerrilla Games showed the world how engaging single player games are made with Horizon Zero Dawn, with an open world experience that has been masterfully crafted to give players a playground where it's very hard to feel bored. In what is easily one of the best expansions of the year, Guerrilla Games gave us an interesting new story arc, some great new characters, and most importantly a reason to revisit a game that was probably shelved months ago for most gamers because there is literally too much good stuff this year.

The Frozen Wilds enhances an already excellent game. The improved dialogue for a number of the characters shows that Guerrilla have clearly taken onboard the criticism levelled at Zero Dawn, while the additional enemy creatures are welcome and make the game feel well rounded and complete. I really enjoyed returning to the world of Horizon Zero Dawn and simply can’t wait for the next game.

Horizon Zero Dawn is already one of the best games of 2017 thanks to a gorgeous open world, pitch-perfect combat (against robot dinosaurs!), and an enticing mystery. Even though Horizon's ending answered all the questions surrounding Aloy's past, players still want more of the intriguing post-apocalyptic world she inhabits – and Guerrilla is all too happy to oblige. In fact, the most generous reading of The Frozen Wilds is not as a prequel or sequel, but as a collection of missing missions. I suspect those who skipped Horizon earlier this year and find time this holiday to play the game with The Frozen Wilds interwoven into the campaign will enjoy the offering more than those of us returning nine months later. They won’t have to relearn the controls, the value of so many items or the names of tribes and their leaders. The Cut will be just another beautiful stop in Aloy’s spectacular adventure.

The Frozen Wilds doesn’t feel like a must-play add-on, but it’s more Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s something you can enjoy once or stack with New Game+ runs when you inevitably play through it again. In other words, an actual expansion.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is an excellent addition to an amazing game. Developer Guerrilla has doubled down on the thrill of the hunt with more challenging machines and testing side quests that are added to the original map through an intriguing new storyline that delves into the mystical side of this post-apocalyptic world. It left me wanting start a brand new game, just to wander around the world, marveling at it.
