Returnal Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
With some doubt at the front of people’s minds, Returnal is a shushing finger across the lips of detractors as well as a tremendous example that PlayStation’s middle line titles can still offer as much value and entertainment as its tentpole exclusives. Housemarque achieves an atmosphere like few can and set up a universe ripe for expansion while marrying it to a grind — which is more forgiving than most of its kind but will still alienate some —that’s both brutal and gratifying all at once.
Returnal doesn’t exactly follow the standard formulation for a Roguelike game, but it takes it a step further with new twists and turns. It's a refreshing redesign of the Roguelike genre combined with Metroidvania.
Returnal is a masterclass in fluid gameplay and creativity on the visual end. Engaging as it is unforgiving. It's a perfect example of that "just one more try" addiction.
As much as Returnal carved a niche of its own on PS5 as a stunning third-person shooter that had been masterfully blended with roguelike design, so too does it manage to inhabit a similarly unique place for PC gamers in 2023. One of the best PlayStation exclusives of 2021 has ended up being one of the best and most glossy PC shooters of 2023. Long may PlayStation Studios incredible run of PC ports continue.
Complex systems are made simple, by committing their clutter to muscle memory, and play—good play, at any rate—requires that you, like Selene, ride its enigmatic loop.
Now that Returnal is out in all its glory for the PC, a plethora of new players can experience this masterpiece, albeit with some minor hiccups along the way.
The PS5 started out with a smaller yet absolutely fantastic library and with what I consider one of the original members of a trio of stellar games available during the first part of that console’s life, Returnal , was an absolute triumph on the PS5 and was included in our list for 2021’s Best
Returnal transforms roguelike gameplay into a third-person shooter where players fight to survive a hostile planet that changes with every death.
Returnal is a great game on console and on PC, and its brilliant fast-paced gameplay will give daring players a highly entertaining experience despite its frustrating elements.
The Outerhaven Returnal PC Review - the bullet hell roguelike action game is a great PC port from Housemarque, despite some performance issues.
“Returnal takes full advantage of the PS5's features to give players a fast and furious sci-fi spectacle.”
This PS5 port is a blast in the heat of battle, but feels trapped between two genres.
