Biomutant
Experiment 101's action RPG has a strong foundation, but it stacks too much on top.
This cute 2D action adventure is a comedic masterclass - but its combat holds it back from being truly brilliant.
The Medium
The Medium has a strong, unique premise, and tells a complex story very coherently - but if you're looking for scares, this probably isn't the horror game for you.
Immortals Fenyx Rising
A fun, family-friendly, imaginative action game that can get a bit grindy, but is still here to save your Christmas.
I Am Dead
An inescapably charming 3D puzzle game with many hidden surprises, I Am Dead's low-pressure treasure hunt and sense of fun is another good tonic for trying times. Being dead is, it turns out, jolly old time.
Pendragon
Inkle's marriage of Arthurian storytelling and turn-based strategy is elegant and replayable - if, perhaps, a little opaque at times.
Paradise Killer
A tough but super stylish investigate 'em up that'll have you dancing all the way to the murder trial. Probably through some blood from a ritual massacre. But that massacre was a legal one, you can ignore it.
Tell Me Why
The pacing makes this one a very slow burn, but Tell Me Why is a good entry into Dontnod's library of stories about families and sad magic.
No Straight Roads
No Straight roads would be a fun enough music-snob rhythm-action game if it was just the cool bosses, but the wonky platforming sections let it down.
Spiritfarer
Spiritfarer's cosy management is a thousand acts of kindness, beautifully done. It will make you sad, but it even does that in a kind way.
Maid of Sker
Maid Of Sker has a creepy story and great music, but in trying too hard to be scary, it ends up less so.
Saints Row The Third: Remastered is probably the best version of this classic action-adventure about gangs 'n' guns. It just depends what that means to you in 2020.
