Man of Medan is a strong start to The Dark Pictures series, and more ambitious than it may first seem on the surface - while a single-player run-through took us 5 hours, the game is about trying that story again in different ways. A nostalgic '90s throwback that's challenging, funny, cleverly designed, and shockingly attractive both despite and because of its ancient engine, which enables gigantic levels packed with detail.
Considering it’s ‘only’ a spin-off, this is a riotous and well-designed entry in the series - however, it’s built with co-op in mind. Solo play is fun if flawed, but play with a friend, and you’ll both have one of the best shooter experiences of the year so far.
Rage 2 has some problems, but taken entirely as an FPS it’s probably my favourite game of the year so far. The open world needs a bit more personality, there needs to be more actual story missions, and you could drown in the amount of upgrade options there are - but none of that matters once you get into combat. Tropico 6 is an excellent Tropico game, for better or worse. Despite the new developer the main innovations are new nefarious actions, more faction involvement, and a vastly improved interface. These all make significant additions to gameplay, but we honestly wish there was more focus on being an international supervillain - and at the end of the day, it still feels like Tropico. Anthem is a tremendously fun base for a game, but is significantly lacking as a game right now. We know for sure that BioWare is making that game and it’s coming soon, but it sure as heck didn’t launch with it. The Anthem gameplay is incredible as an Iron Man simulator, with some great abilities, and the sense of flight is wonderful. The world and story is potentially interesting too.
Far Cry New Dawn may be a shorter Far Cry experience, but it’s one of the most fun games in the series since Blood Dragon. The bizarrely colourful post-apocalyptic world is far more enjoyable to explore than the drab pre-bombing Hope County of Far Cry 5, and the Mad Max-style enemies are a lot more fun to take on than the Peggies.
