It's fitting that after six years of being a haven for turn-based strategy titles, the Nintendo Switch is finally getting an Advance Wars game with Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp.

When it comes to Nintendo’s strategy franchises, I have never been a fan of Fire Emblem. Maybe it’s my overall lack of interest towards medieval fantasy, or the saturation caused by the barrage of anime pretty boys stemming from the franchise in the Smash games. I have always gravitated towards the more neglected strategy games developed by Intelligent Systems: Advance Wars. Their simplicity, approachability, and customization options have always captivated me since the good old days of t...

Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp is a wonderful recreation of a long-neglected classic. The games pull you right in with smooth and satisfying gameplay, a catchy art style, and tons of fun features for many added hours of play. Now the question is, when will we get the rest of the Advance Wars reboots?

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp isn't a perfect title on its own merits, but it's addictive, stylish, and fun. The wonderful characters make up for an uninteresting and predictable plot. It'd be great to see more Advance Wars and other Wars titles make their way over to the system, but adding matchmaking for online play would be a must.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is a worthy remake of some of the best strategy titles around. Deserving renewed love, these Advance Wars titles bring rich layers of tactical gameplay to a new generation. Upgraded visuals are gorgeous and continue to reflect the game's essence despite some design changes. Players can experience the campaigns at their own pace with varying degrees of difficulty, as well as the option to fast forward through play. Messing up is never fun, so a turn restart option has also been added to ease players into gameplay. From thinking about terrain bonuses, to picking a...

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a remake of the first two original games in the classic Game Boy Advance series. Freshly available on the Nintendo Switch, it is an excellent excuse to return to some of the tactics genre’s best, or a strong welcome to those that missed it. Twenty years since either of these games was released, the revived tactics series has aged the best, compared to others. This is one worth pulling your bootstraps up for.

Nintendo and WayForward took a risk in bringing Advance Wars back from the scrap heap with Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, releasing a set of tactics-heavy games in a genre now defined by character relationships. The remakes change little from the original releases and don’t deepen the story or cast, but they don’t have to change anything. Advance Wars’ unique features are as apparent as ever. If anything, they’re made even stronger by the series’ extended absence.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is packed to the brim with content and has that addictive "just one more mission" feel. Though some may find the story to be unserious and shallow, it's completely accessible and enjoyable to newcomers of the genre like myself while also providing depth and challenge for veterans. Enthusiasts will get hundreds of hours of entertainment out of the game.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a tough sell to some for a variety of reasons. Straight-up: a lot of folks likely aren’t going to want to pay full price to experience these games all over again, and I get it. But I found myself falling in love with the Advance Wars universe for the second time in my life, despite occasionally going back to my still-working GBA copies. I really hope this leads to a series resurgence, and Nintendo/WayForward both use this opportunity to move the franchise forward from the ground up.

The multiplayer's shortcomings aren't a dealbreaker, but they're definitely disappointing. Even with a subpar multiplayer experience, Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is still a game worth experiencing. It's a triumph of tactical strategy with a vibrant coat of paint. It's a reminder of what a gem of a franchise Nintendo has been sitting on for over a decade and represents a hope that maybe there's more Advance Wars on the horizon.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp takes a strategy classic and buffs it up for a modern audience – the fact that it is so faithful to the originals only reinforces how brilliant they were in the first place. Re-Boot Camp is essential for fans of tactical warfare, and a perfect companion for Nintendo Switch; hopefully its release will rekindle interest in the series, and bring us a long overdue new entry.

We’d understand if Nintendo Switch owners are getting brain fatigue from all the strategy games released these past few months, but given Advance Wars is the granddaddy of them all, we’re happy to make an exception for Re-Boot Camp.
