Part of me wishes Another Crab’s Treasure predated the Souls games, just so we would have to refer to genre offshoots as Crablikes. The sauce is certainly thick on this one, and I’ll be thinking about it for quite some time. Another Crab’s Treasure pulls off exactly what it set out to do, and it’s going to be a favorite for many. Thanks to some of the less palatable late-game moments, it didn’t quite get to that level for me, but I very much appreciate all the shell-bound friends and pelagic puns I met along the way.

A crab's shell is his castle, but poor Kril's has been rudely snatched away from him. Now he must dodge, parry, and fight his way through an ocean of trouble in this unique Soulslike.

Who would have expected that Soulslike would just become its own genre? At this point we have the likes of Lords of the Fallen, Lies of P, and now Another Crab’s Treasure, which is easily the cutest of all of them. The basic premise is that Kril, the titular crab, has his home (shell) taken away for not paying the taxes of the sea. Kril doesn’t like people, but is forced to rejoin civilization in order to get his home back from an ocean that is getting more and more polluted as the story ...

If you’ve been looking to take the plunge and play a Soulslike game but were afraid of the dying or “get good” nonsense, then Another Crab’s Treasure should be first on your list. The simplified systems, while still processing the same great Soulslike gameplay, and even the assist mode that lets you play at your own pace. Come on in, the water is fine!

After diving into Another Crab's Treasure, it's hard to understand why hasn't more been done to expand beyond the foundational souls-like element. There's clearly room for thinking outside the box, and Aggro Crab mostly nails it with this unique take. With colorful characters and an even more vibrant world, jump in for the feel-good vibes and partake in mostly satisfying underwater combat. Despite the occasional hiccups, this is still one shell of an adventure that works great for genre veterans and newcomers alike.

As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, a new game will enter the Soulslike genre, be a little weird and stir some attention. Last year that was Lies of P, merging the world of Pinnochio with gritty and cruel action RPG combat to surprising effect. This year’s answer is Another Crab’s Treasure, the second release from indie studio Aggro Crab.

Upgrades and other pieces of equipment build upon and feed into the promise of the shell system and make it explode. A grappling hook, for example, allows you to pull shells toward you in the middle of combat, rewarding quick thinking when the going gets rough. An upgrade I unlocked allowed me to recover my shell’s health, which gets knocked down when you block, by attacking immediately afterwards ala Bloodborne’s health mechanic. A hammer upgrade lets you stick any shell on the end of your weapon and make it more powerful, while simultaneously granting you a second shield and set...

How much of an impact does a game’s aesthetic have on how it feels to play? That question was consistently at the forefront of my mind as I played Another Crab’s Treasure. Aggro Crab’s latest game is a Soulslike, a style of game known to be quite frustrating as players slowly learn how to overcome challenging combat encounters. It’s also colorful and funny, something that visually doesn’t feel too far off from SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake.

A playful Soulslike for everyone, that lets you give a crab a gun.

Another Crab's Treasure might be cartoony and fun, but its still got everything you'd want from a Soulslike: great bosses, huge and sprawling levels, and plenty of giant enemy crabs.

Another Crab's Treasure sets out to try and create a Soulslike that trims down the complicated foundation into a new approachable format and succeeds in every regard. A variety of accessibility options mean that anybody can dive in and experience the journey of Kril and have a part to play in the hunt for his shell. While inviting newcomers, Another Crab's Treasure manages to offer an exceptionally unique approach to combat that manages to stand out among the crowd. Technical hiccups throughout sour the experience very slightly, but the game on show here is ambitious and a strong candidate for...

Another Crab's Treasure riffs off the Soulslike genre, but strikes a great balance between humour and homage. This is a great game with a good message, and above all else, it's just a lot of fun.

Another Crab’s Treasure will call Kril out, along with players, for witnessing the negative changes in the world around them and ignoring them, especially since players will find that Kril spends the majority of his time with one selfish goal in mind, to return to the tide pool with his shell. Kril acts so selfishly at times that players may be forced to wonder whether he’s even a likable protagonist. However, Kril eventually is forced to face his actions in a way that is sure to have players shaken and contemplating the fundamentals of life, long after the credits roll....
Read Full ReviewAnother Crab’s Treasure is a shocker of a good time. The combat is mostly fair and interesting with all of the stuff you can do involving shells, level-ups, Stowaways, and other options. The world is also fun to explore, beautiful, if a little bittersweet, and full of secrets. Mix that with a good soundtrack and a funny story full of cute little crustacean characters, and Another Crab’s Treasure might be one of the most surprisingly sturdy Souls-likes I’ve seen in years.

The game’s music is fantastic. It’s a smooth mix of jazzy pianos and light melodies that had me bopping during combat and relaxed during exploration. Bug-wise I ran into a few issues with getting stuck in the environment. The game has a built-in solution where it will just plop you straight up if you can’t move for a few seconds, but it doesn’t always work quickly. At one point I was stuck in between two rocks for three minutes before I finally glitched through them and was free.

Another Crab's Treasure is a colorful and lively platformer that's also a tough action RPG with Soulslike combat. They juxtapose each other perfectly, and I had a fun time discovering shells, collecting microplastics, and defeating grueling bosses.

There's a lot to like about Another Crab's Treasure. Its underwater setting and cutesy premise makes this a unique Soulslike, and its accessibility options means this is one of only a few games in the genre that can truly be played by all. But there are bugs and issues galore, stopping this crustacean's adventure from being quite as enjoyable as it should be.
