Celeste is a textbook example of doing so much with so little. The gameplay mechanics don’t exactly evolve but the ingenious level design and ever-changing obstacles force you to use your limited move set in new and inventive ways. Celeste is full of surprises like this but possibly its most surprising trick is how invested I became in Madeline’s personal journey to climb the challenging Celeste Mountain. Without going too far into spoiler territory, I discovered that Celeste tells a story about depression and overcoming those personal struggles. It certainly caught me off guard, in a good way, and some...

Mountain climbers don’t climb mountains because it’s easy. Difficult challenges are often intrinsically rewarding, and Celeste is that kind of experience. This adorable platformer about a troubled young woman named Madeline who pushes herself to climb a mountain is full of platforming sequences that mirror the heroine’s own struggles. The journey isn’t always easy, but the view from the top is spectacular.

2,649. That’s how many times I’ve died while playing through Celeste’s main story chapters. I realize it might look a bit extreme, dying that many times in a six to seven hour-long video game, but it’s a number I’m particularly proud of.

Unique, beautiful, highly challenging, and emotional, Celeste is an excellent game, and a must-play for even non-platformer fans.

The best indie platformer since Super Meat Boy, but also one of the best storytelling experiences of recent years – with an incisive and thoughtful portrayal of mental illness.

Celeste is the latest effort from Matt Makes Games, the team responsible for one of PS4's best multiplayer games, TowerFall Ascension. The bow and arrow brawling is well loved, in part because of the responsive and satisfying movement. Doubling down on the strength of TowerFall's platforming, Celeste is all about precisely hopping your way through treacherous gauntlets as you scale the titular mountain.

Celeste is an exemplary amalgamation of style, mechanics and character. A devilishly brilliant action platformer with enough skill required to excite genre purists and the speed running community, while at the same time featuring a breakdown of gameplay elements to customize and cater for all audiences. While the game mechanically is great, if familiar, the art style and narrative are truly special, showing both a visual and emotional range and depth that will resonate and inspire. Celeste is the absolute peak of personal exploration and discovery on Nintendo Switch.

In the new platformer from the creator of Towerfall, it's just you, a mountain, and a heap of anxiety.

It took me almost eight hours to complete and apart from some mild frustrations in one of the final worlds, which felt like it had more wild goose chases and dead-ends than the rest of the game combined, I enjoyed every minute. The more I think about it, the more the events of the narrative seem beautifully intertwined with the messages about difficulty and the Assist Mode.

Celeste is pure. Each room offers new challenges, but the solution is always the same: jump. Jumping is remixed in dozens of different, exciting ways. Celeste is the very soul of simplicity, and that’s what makes it such a beautiful game.

An engaging, vibrant and challenging platformer that adds narrative to a genre often shy of it.

On top of that, there is a great story that addresses themes of depression, self-discovery, and ultimately perseverance, which can be applied to both one's personal life and the experience one has in general when playing a difficult game. You may get mad at a few points, but that peak is always there waiting for you, within reach, and is something we should all strive for, whether it is in-game or not.

For the first time in ages, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. Celeste was everything I’d hoped for and then some. I’m not saying this is the best video game I’ve ever played. It’s much too early to start declaring things like that. What I am saying is that this is an essential gaming experience. Everything this team set out to do they accomplished. If you have any love for indie games, you’re about to fall head over heels. These people have created something very close to perfection.

Celeste is a surprise masterpiece. Its 2D platforming is some of the best and toughest since Super Meat Boy, with levels that are as challenging to figure out as they are satisfying to complete. Hidden throughout those levels are a wealth of secrets and collectibles, some of which push the skills it teaches you to the absolute limit, along with enough end-game content to keep you playing for dozens of hours. But the greatest triumph of Celeste is that its best-in-class jumping and dashing is blended beautifully with an important and sincere story and an incredible soundtrack that make it...

There's a real satisfaction in knowing you've made it all the way to the top of the mountain, especially after watching Madeline's story unfold. And with enough collectible and even harder levels out there, there's much more to the five-hour story that'll keep the most hardened platforming fan going for a long time.
