Children of Morta is a nicely designed dungeon crawler with a huge heart. As you skillfully hack your way through skeleton hordes and fire arrows at demonic ghouls, the lives of the ten people in the Bergson family are explored fully; you watch them bond, struggle, and ultimately grow – from children and parents to magic-wielding gods. This action/RPG strikes an odd balance between showing the purity of family life and the need to sacrifice all to save the world, but it ends up being compelling and thoughtful, giving you plenty of reason to cheer the Bergson's on.

There comes a time in every game’s life cycle when it undergoes some big changes. After some shedding, molting, and a little quality cocoon-time, every game makes the long journey to its final home on the Nintendo Switch. That time has finally arrived for Children of Morta, and it’s a beautiful fit! For the most part. In spite of any hiccups, this is one more game that feels like a perfect match for Nintendo’s hybrid console.

Families can be funny things; they can either be your best friends or a gigantic pain in the arse. Sometimes they can even be both at the same time. In Children of Morta, the Bergson family have to put up with all the usual family drama like kids misbehaving and drunken uncles, but they also have the added complication of having to defend the world from the encroaching malevolent force known as The Corruption.

None of this is to say that Children of Morta is a bad game. In some ways, it’s very good. The way it interweaves the familial unit throughout the story and the game’s mechanics is an awesome touch. In motion, the game is absolutely gorgeous. That said, I think there are better roguelikes in which to sink your teeth. The Bergsons were a great family to visit, but much like a crazy aunt, I wouldn’t want to live with them forever.

Verdict: Children of Morta was a fantastic fantasy, action-adventure game to play for all ages. The narration was what would pull the player(s) in and entrap them in a captivated setting. Even though the gameplay has been done before and can come off as basic toward other rogue-lite games out there Children of Morta should be a title worth checking out.

When you beat the Children of Morta you will have the feeling that you are not only abandoning the great, dynamic hack'n'slash, but also that you are leaving the family home where you simply felt good and safe.

Children of Morta is an excellently designed action RPG that hosts some well refined dungeon crawling elements. The story is a classic tale of good versus evil, but there’s some original ideas and lessons about the concept of family and togetherness just below the surface. There’s no shortage of variety here either, as Children of Morta has a colorful roster of characters that are each unique from one another, and plenty of items to add an extra layer of strategy to your journeys. Children of Morta is an absolute joy of an experience whether you choose to go alone, or...

Ultimately, Children of Morta is not a bad game, but the story is the only thing that really stands out as being good. Couch co-op better illustrates how the family works together and adds some life to trudging through the dungeons. However, the gameplay doesn’t have enough variety or surprises to be a good roguelike, and the progression is too shallow and sparse to work as an RPG.

Children of Morta is the best roguelike I've played in 2019. A strong story, exciting combat, and great characters make it a must-play for any roguelike fan.
Read Full ReviewThis is what it all comes down to in the end. Children of Morta would be a perfectly good linear dungeon crawler; it would also be a pretty good roguelike. But it genuinely manages to strike the perfect balance between the two, offering addictive, challenging and varied gameplay, as well as strong narrative, characters and world building. Besides some difficulty issues with the two-player mode and the melee characters, it’s a pretty great game. Plus the spirit you rescue at the end of the first area looks like a giant floating vagina, so what more could you want?

With procedural worlds, fantastic cooperative combat, and a storyline that makes you care about the entire Bergson family, Children of Morta represents the best example of games as art. There are still a few months to go in 2019, but Children of Morta is looking like my Indie Game of the Year.
