Conan Exiles, the open-world crafting survival game has officially released on all platforms such as PS4, XB1, and PC. Take on the ruthless world set in the Conan universe, create your very own unique character, and survive everything the world has to throw at you. When I was assigned Conan Exiles for review, I was hesitant to jump in because I though the game was a MMO (I had confused it with Funcom’s Age of Conan) and I had heard some complaints from friends about the game’s early access struggles. It took less than an hour of playing before I had bought in to the world of Conan Exiles. It’s not perfect (and carries many of the warts that are now tropes of the survival genre), but I’ve yet to find myself bored or disillusioned with any part of the experience. When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.

Conan Exiles takes a more mature approach to the survival/crafting genre and fulfils all your barbaric desires.

The first challenge you’ll have to overcome in Conan Exiles is the download. For this review, I was offered a download code which clocked in at around 50 GB. Even with good, uninterrupted connection that’s still a few hours before you can actually play the game. Once you finally enter the Exiled Lands, though, you’ll find a survival game with a heavy leaning on RPG adventures.

Conan Exiles isn't revolutionary, and it has its fair share of issues, but it's also a very engaging, addictive experience that can keep you hooked for dozens of hours.

Conan Exiles is often slow and arduous, but even after 70 hours – 40 since launch – the idea of returning to the Exiled Lands still holds some allure. Crafting is largely a tedious grind, especially the higher up you get in the crafting tiers, and it’s surprising that in a world about brutal combat, Conan Exiles falls flat there. However, the beautifully realized world is a joy to explore and it nails the atmosphere of the source material.

Conan Exiles is one of the most disappointing games I have played this generation. I have not experienced another game on PlayStation 4 as broken as Exiles. It is hard to believe that a game could be released for purchase in such bad condition. In another genre, the bugs in Exiles might be fun or amusing. In a survival game, they are crippling. Gamers deserve, and should demand, better.

As you play more of Conan Exiles and access higher tier items, it becomes more and more clear that there was serious potential here. The survival aspects of the game are fun, provided survival is your thing, and it brings some new ideas and features to the table. The thrall system in particular is interesting, but ultimately fails in its execution. Considering its price, I can’t help but feel the package and its quality is a little lacking.
