Crow Country “caws” back to old-school horror games from the PS1-era, preserving what made them suspenseful and engaging while adding some updates. Not all of these work, but enough do, making a trip to Crow Country worth taking for fans of retro survival horror games.

Postscript: A Hard Mode has recently been added to the game. I’ve only had time to play an hour or so with the new mode, but I can say that the challenge is significantly amped up in a number of clever ways, such as drastically decreasing ammo availability, making enemies harder to kill, and offering new secrets I’ll let you discover on your own. Crow Country now feels much more complete as a classic survival horror experience.

The original Resident Evil and Silent Hill on PlayStation 1 arguably set the framework for all survival horror games to come. In the past few years, many great indie survival horror projects have used these classics for inspiration. Crow Country now follows suit as a charming, nostalgic homage to the past. The game cuts the archaic fat of the original classics and streamlines the experience to suit a more modern audience, while also providing a disgustingly comforting romp for survival horror...

Inspired by classic survival horror games of the '90s, Crow Country's puzzle-laden gameplay is enjoyable on the whole. It's not scary in the slightest, though, and its combat is a bit of a let-down. While fans of the genre might want to check it out, then, it's unlikely to be remembered as a classic itself.

The Resident Evil series has redefined and refined survival horror in recent years, arguably single-handedly. However, as the venerable series continues to push the genre forward, a growing number of indie games are looking back to survival horror’s late ‘90s heyday for inspiration. Crow Country joins those ranks, offering a respectable nostalgic homage to the past. Veterans won’t encounter anything they haven’t seen, but the experience is comforting in its spooky familiarity.

Filled with great puzzles and an engaging world, Crow Country is a well made recreation of how you remember classic 90s horror games. It's familiar enough to feel authentic but different enough to keep things mysterious.

Crow Country puts more emphasis on puzzles than the survival part of survival horror, but it's a well-observed love letter to the genre with great attention to detail all over the place. It's somehow equal parts charming and creepy.

Lean and grungy, Crow Country evokes the simple pleasures of early survival horror.

Fans of classic survival horror games don't need to think twice about picking up Crow Country. The game is a love letter to old-school horror titles from the 90s, and is one of the better attempts at recreating the feel of PS1 horror on modern platforms. It's a short, but sweet adventure with solid replay value and fun puzzles that perfectly captures the feeling of playing an old horror game on a PS1. The optional Exploration mode, which does away with combat to let players focus entirely on puzzle-solving, means that even horror fans who don't like 90s-era survival horror...
