A roguelike at heart with a rhythm-game soul, Crypt Of The NecroDancer is a sublime experience that’s a must-play for fans of the genre(s). Its upbeat, uptempo take on dungeon crawling is infectious, and there’s enough content here to last even the savviest of spelunkers for many, many dance-fuelled dives into the depths — if you’ve never tangoed with the NecroDancer, this fully-featured Switch edition is the perfect way to jump in.

Rogue-likes have been combined with many gameplay styles but this one makes use of rhythm mechanics. Is dancing around a dungeon as exciting as it sounds? Put on a suit of armour with matching dancing shoes and let's find out.

Imagine playing Dark Souls. You’ve just saved up enough to purchase a new sword that will give you just enough reach to take out that foe from a distance. Unfortunately, you make a stupid mistake, and you die. But when you come back, that sword is gone, and you have to die fifteen more times before a random number generator decides you can have it back. Maybe you never get it back…Now, I realize Crypt of the Necrodancer is not Dark Souls. The metronomic dungeon crawler is more important than the more RPG-esque progression systems, and when you realize that, you will get the most out of the game. But, in my opinion, the game should have dropped the roguelike aspects entirely, as they frustrate an otherwise enjoyable core experience. Still, Crypt of the Necrodancer succeeds more than it fails, and should not be missed.

Crypt of the NecroDancer; the dance-based roguelike you never expected to work.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is an awesome rhythm game you don't want to pass up if you're into the genre.  It solidly blends dungeon crawling with moving in time to the rhythm and the soundtrack is great.  Putting in your own soundtrack is a huge plus for me as well as I have a lot of classic NES music I can use to match the retro-style look of the game.  If you like rhythm games, definitely pick this one up.

Crypt of the NecroDancer accomplishes what few games even attempt to do. It merges together two completely different genres: rhythm and roguelike. The frustrations of both come as part of the package, but some intelligent design decisions help to alleviate the issue. For those looking for the next gaming obsession after the likes of Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, or Rogue Legacy, look no further than Crypt of the NecroDancer.

There are plenty of things to spend your diamonds on in Crypt of the NecroDancer though, so you shouldn’t have any problems finding something you want. There are various merchants in the lobby that you’ll have to find keys to gain access to, including a Dungeon Master that sells permanent upgrades such as heart containers and coin multipliers, and a Beastmaster that allows you to train against those pesky mobs that you just can’t figure out how to beat.

Crypt of the Necrodancer offers just about every feature imaginable, and each one is executed absolutely masterfully.  It’s wholly unique and provides a tension found nowhere else, offering up some rhythm to the roguelike genre just as it started to feel like it was getting stale.

Challenging and entertaining, Crypt of the Necrodancer is a lot of fun, but the difficulty can become frustrating.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a fast paced dungeon crawler that brilliantly blends rhythm based mechanics into a chimeric roguelike that can entertain you for hours. If you manage to master the music you will be rewarded with engaging combat, a plethora of items to use and an addictive adventure that you can sink your teeth into. However if the beat breaks you down then this game is nothing more than a heartache.

Good music can make or break a game. A catchy stage theme can burrow into your head longer than a radioactive earwig, while the most abrasive offenders suffer music's worst fate: the mute button. Crypt of the Necrodancer pulls off the improbable, delivering three awesome soundtracks and allowing you to weave your own music library into the core of its punishing roguelike gameplay.

Crypt of the Necrodancer marries rhythm and roguelike in a unique way — It feels accessible, fun, and fairly difficult at any given moment.

From a distance, Crypt of the NecroDancer seems like a very mathematical game. The logic used to dispatch enemies should ideally play out like a neat algorithm, flawlessly executed once you know their patterns and how to manipulate them. That’s not how it works, of course, as the dungeons are complicated, chaotic things, and players are forced to move at the whim of the soundtrack’s tempo, with little room for error. Logic meets chaos. It’s a tension evident in many games, and it’s exemplified wonderfully here.
