December 5, 2024 Read Review

Dolmen provides fans of SciFi and Souls games with another daunting adventure full of defeat and satisfaction. The game isn’t without faults, having a few bugs as well as some inconsistencies with some combat mechanics, but the team at Massive Work Studio have laid a solid foundation. The game provides just enough reward to make the challenge worth it.

Dolmen relies too much on the Soulslike playbook to be much of anything other than a middling iteration of the formula.

east we can expect if a game hopes to make a dent. However, with all these issues plaguing the game, plus visuals that hardly scream 2022, Dolmen is not living up to expectations at all. The game tries to include many of the hallmarks of the genre, but muddles it all up with poor systems and execution. For a fan that has grown used to the genre's often challenging requirements, recommending Dolmen is something that will only happen in an alternate dimension.

We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.

It’s just disappointing that a lack of polish and modern sensibilities hinder the product at all turns, leaving what could have been a chunky and ambitious slice of indie action horror down a path forgotten and overshadowed.

If this game cooked for another six months to a year, the devs could take it beyond just having the basics to being something truly special. But as it stands right now, this game does not really offer enough satisfaction and enjoyment to be worth its asking price.

Dolmen is a self-described Soulslike adventure. Featuring a soldier suited up in technologically advanced armour, wielding swords and guns, players must escape the alien planet known as Revion Prime. Dreadful cosmic horrors such as martian soldiers and arachnids await, confronted only with your methodical movement and combat. All these elements and more make up for a modestly sized and joyously atmospheric game. Even when it’s not the most prestigious, shiniest, or polished entry in the ...

Dolmen is a solid sci-fi spin on the Soulslike formula, even if there are some places where it falls short. Not being able to jump is a simple but detrimental design flaw, and the mediocre cinematics bog down what could have been a very cinematic experience. Despite that, Dolmen still features challenging combat, as well as a variety of ways to play to your own unique style. I look forward to seeing if and how Massive Work Studio will build upon this foundation in the future.

As far as sci-fi Souls-likes go, Dolmen sits somewhere between Hellpoint and The Surge in terms of quality. It can offer a rewarding experience to Souls-like fans, but it falls short of the bar set by the creators of the genre. Still, for those who have patience and persistence, and like the idea of exploring a new, futuristic setting while engaging in challenging combat, it’s worth checking out.

Clunky combat, boring progression, threadbare plot, unrewarding exploration, and a laughably bad healing mechanic. All of these lead to a soulless Souls-like that is Dolmen.

Developers, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news first. We’re living in a post-Elden Ring world now. If you make a Soulslike game, it’s going to be compared to FromSoft’s masterpiece, like it or not. It’s not good enough to just be a Dark Souls knockoff anymore. Here’s the good news, though. If you can give us a decent Soulslike with something other than a high fantasy setting, well, there’s room for that at the table. So, where does Dolmen sit? At the table with the grown ups, or not?

May 19, 2022 Read Review

Dolmen is yet another Soulslike that proves this formula is almost impossible to get right. It's a flat, boring experience with none of the spark and vigor it needs to transcend its many technical flaws.

I had a lot of high expectations for Dolmen, considering the premise and gameplay genre. Unfortunately, it botches just about every aspect of being a Souls-like game. There were many concerns that I could look past in the demo, but are inexcusable in a full release. Not only are the technical mechanics poorly implemented with inaccurate hitbox detection and animations, the artificial difficulty and long spans of nothingness make the game frustrating for all the wrong reasons.

Dolmen wants to put its mark in the Action RPG genre with a potentially intriguing Space/Horror tale that never really goes to space, and isn’t at all scary. It never feels good to play, broke on me constantly, and was an ugly maze of bland/blocky corridors. Retailing for $39.99 at launch I can’t in good conscious recommend this over almost any other game in the genre, though if you want something fun in connection with this game look up what Dolmen means in Swedish Slang.

You know the first time I covered Dolmen on WTMG? It was back in 2017, the first year in the site’s history. I covered it once again the following year, but soon after, the game vanished. It had a ridiculously promising premise for its time, being one of the first futuristic soulslikes back when that term didn’t even exist. I also have to point out I was cheering for the game’s success, given it was coming from my home country of Brazil, where at the time the industry was still in its i...
