When the words “Damacy-like” are uttered, you can bet your sweet sticky star maker I’m going to be paying attention. Twitter was a flutter with gorgeous clips from Ben Esposito’s next indie darling. Months of anticipation and, in equal right, controversy filled my feeds. Once Donut County dropped on Switch, I plunged into that raccoon-hole with eyes closed. I had dreamed of falling through beautiful visuals and multiple zany levels of intuitive and creative gameplay that showed us wha...

Out of all of the many whimsical and fantastical creatures and characters you could create in a video game, developer Ben Esposito did a complete 180 and made a playable hole in Donut County. Instead of managing a cast of crazy characters, players are tasked with moving around from area to area, swallowing everything as an ever-expanding chasm. What might sound like a tedious and even boring experience is instead handled in such a way that it makes for an interesting and puzzling adventure.

It’s something of a dilemma to be left disappointed by a game where your only complaint is that it left you wanting more. But that’s how I feel about Donut County. What it does, it does very well. But there just isn’t enough of it. The fantastic art style and wonderfully unique and silly gameplay is captivating in a way that only truly special games are. But it’s all over far too fast, ultimately leaving players feeling rather underwhelmed. Still, enter Donut County expecting a very short experience, and you’ll enjoy every minute. Just prepare to want more of its...

Donut County is as charming and funny as it is inventive and beautiful. It excels at what it sets out to do –there’s never been a better hole simulator in video game history. But underneath its colorful scenery and intuitive gameplay is an experience that feels like its inches away from true greatness.

Well, as I look at this blank page, I immediately want to fill the void with hole puns, because I’m the type of person to never do anything halfway. Donut County began as somewhat of a pun, a joke within itself. During the credits it’s revealed that it was born from a Peter Molydeux tweet, the famed Twitter account parodying real-life game designer Peter Molyneux by tweeting out bizarre and unrealistic game ideas. Clearly not too unrealistic, because Donut County’s creator, Ben Esposito, was able to shape that idea into a addictively engaging game. Somehow, Donut County also manages to...

Donut County's initial ideas are fun, and the game is quite hilarious. I just wish it did more with its concepts.

If some strange person were to run up to you on the street and feverishly ask you to explain what an indie game is, Donut County might be the perfect example to offer that weirdo. The experience is built around a bizarre (but easy-to-understand) mechanic, and it’s all wrapped up in a quirky story that you can finish in one memorable-but-strange sitting.

Donut County is a charming and straightforward example of how video games don't need to be overly complex or contain multiple mechanics and systems to make for a good time. While your enjoyment of the game will likely depend on how satisfying you find its overall loop of dropping stuff into a hole, if this does click with you, then there's a lot that you'll love. For the low price of entry, Donut County is worth picking up and spending an evening with just to have a good chuckle.

The world is your playground in Donut County, and yet it’s the most wholesome way to see everything come crashing down. Despite some serious setbacks, the characters remain optimistic and retain a healthy sense of resolve. Listening to each of them tell their stories feels like hanging with a big group of friends. If a hole destroyed my town today, I think I’d be okay with it. It’s not the hole’s fault.

How many developers can say their game was inspired by a tweet from a parody Twitter account? Donut County's central premise of controlling a hole in the ground and swallowing up objects is wonderfully novel, and has resulted in a game that's more entertaining than you'd think. In the best possible way, it's one of the silliest games on PS4, wrapping a truly daft story around a mechanic that's a pleasure to toy with.

It may be a very short diversion, but Donut County is a delight. It’s absolutely brimming with personality, has a killer soundtrack and visual aesthetic, and is based on an irresistible gameplay hook. I’d have loved more, but I guess I’ll just settle for playing through it again.
