God Eater 3 isn’t for everyone. Some will find it too easy, its story is passable, its controls take some getting to… I could go on. Thanks to its engaging fast-paced combat and considerable character development options, however, it’s well worth working through its flaws. If you’re after some Monster Hunter-style action on Switch you can’t really go wrong with it. And it’s perfect for those wanting to dip their toes into the genre; Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is good, but it’s really not friendly to those not already familiar with the Monster Hunter series’ mechanics and quirks.

This is a game that keeps in line with the previous entries. It’s like that younger sibling who’s managed to be more skillful and prettier than the elders, except for the rampant use of duct tape for clothes.

God Eater 3 rewards you for diving deeper into its mechanics. There’s a lot to like here when it comes to customization and combat, but the story and level design leave a lot to be desired. While the graphics are pretty, they feel a bit too simple at times, especially when comparing them to similar games like those in the Monster Hunter series. Still, though, Bandai Namco have managed to pull the God Eater series to a new high. While it isn’t the best game you’ll play this year, fans of the series will want to pick it up to...

Taken on its own terms, though, with God Eater 3 we have a pretty hunting game that moves like lightning and makes its stylish combat feel like something worth mastering. Players willing to adjust their expectations will find plenty to fill up on, but those seeking a novel new taste rather than a bit of comfort food may want to keep looking.

God Eater 3 (GE3) is a Monster Hunter-esque game but in Anime Style. Now, a lot of you might be thinking “is just a rip-off of Monster Hunter”. Well, I’m here to tell you that is not. God Eater is somewhat different and more complicated than what I expected.

My experience with the God Eater franchise is admittedly limited. I’ve only played a dozen or so hours of Rage Burst on PC before. It was a highly entertaining Monster Hunter-like game that made a surprisingly good transition to PC. God Eater 3 is the first game in the series to be designed for PC and current generation consoles. But does it hold the same caliber?

God Eater 3 manages to pull of a deep and enjoyable combat experience, despite some annoyances with the camera and missions repeating themselves.

When the very first God Eater released in 2010, its Monster Hunter inspirations were completely clear, as much of what it did aped Capcom’s popular hunting franchise. After nine years, however, God Eater 3 staunchly has an identity of its own, and one that I enjoyed immensely despite some lingering issues.

What God Eater 3 lacks in its story and varied content it more than makes up for with excellent pulse-pounding action, great enemy designs, and some of the most exciting combat this entire genre has seen to date. In between those battles are a lot of dull and mandatory NPC interactions, load screens, menus, and the unambitious world design, and short, simple eight-player raids leave a lot of room for improvement, but it’s a relief to see this series make the mostly successful jump from handhelds to consoles and PCs where it has the opportunity to grow in those areas.

It doesn't use the transition to modern consoles fully to its advantage, but with plenty of man-eating Aragami and action that is simply exhilarating to participate in, God Eater 3 is an Action RPG that's good as a snack, and even a three-course meal once future content arrives.

God Eater 3 makes for hours of fun if you can get past its repetitious environments, typical anime-style graphics, and poor storytelling. The gameplay really is fantastic but it is under a blanket of blandness that made it hard for me to enjoy God Eater 3 to its full potential. It has the foundation of a great game but just fails to reach those heights that I hoped it could.

God Eater 3 is a good if unremarkable title in the monster hunting subgenre. This is a game that doesn't excel in any one area, but none of its shortcomings are damning to the point of ruining an enjoyable experience. There are attempts at giving more depth to combat with the characters engaging each other and having burst attacks, but using these actions strategically doesn't greatly alter the battle outcome from just button mashing. The repetitive mission structure paired with a story and characters that feel as if they could have been lifted from any number of games prevent this...

Anime-style games tend to have a form vs function problem. Everything is crazy beautiful and oozing cool, but it sucks a little bit? God Eater 3 is a prime example of a game that looks awesome but feels rather uninspired, though it’s not without merit. As a massive anime fan, seeing games like this makes me a little sad. Both because they could be better and because I’m still going to play it to death. Alas, we all have our faults.

God Eater is a series built for a single reason. Fight big monsters, on the go, with anime aesthetics and a nice story to tie it all together. It's pure and simple. You get to create a character, arm yourself with some weapons bigger than yourself, and just test it all against the world. Isn't that great?
