Harvestella is Square Enix's endearing first attempt at a farming sim RPG, only slightly held back by its budget.

The year 2022 will be marked as a year where Square Enix decided to release a metric crap ton of titles, most of them completely devoid of a marketing campaign. In the past, those stealth drops were “reserved” to duds like The Quiet Man or Left Alive, but it feels like most titles released this year had little to no marketing backing whatsoever, regardless of their quality. One of them, to me, is Harvestella. When it first came out, I didn’t even notice it. Very few people did. But cons...

Square Enix and Live Wire took to the fields for Harvestella. An ambitious story sticks the landing with a thoroughly engaging gameplay loop for one of this year's bigger surprises.

Harvestella wants to be a jack of two trades, but winds up a master of none. Part action-RPG, part farming/life simulation, this combination can sometimes be enjoyable, but the two styles clash more often than not. The result is a sluggish grind more likely to repel fans of each genre than bring them together.

Harvestella left a big impression on me when it was first announced during a Nintendo Direct a few months ago, even though a farming sim crossed with a JRPG isn’t necessarily a new idea with franchises like Rune Factory still releasing games. Harvestella caught my eye with its art direction, soundtrack and interesting hook in Quietus, a death season that kills all crops and forces townsfolk to stay indoors.

Harvestella is a fresh coat of paint on a familiar wall. It's a good wall, solid foundation, level, able to withstand the elements, and damn good paint. But it's still a wall. If you want to play the newest, most innovative farm sim to date, it's not going to be Harvestella. If you want to play the best version of the farm sim for the modern era, look no further. While it does some odd things, like invisible walls to areas you can clearly see, or not being able to jump on a rock, in the end, those don't matter....

Harvestella is the perfect game to cuddle up on the couch with, preferably in handheld mode on Nintendo Switch or on Steam Deck. While it doesn’t deliver the best JRPG or farming sim, it is the only game that delivers both experiences at the same time, delivering a unique entry in a crowded genre that manages to be a breath of fresh air.

When it comes to 2022, there were a few games that I found myself incredibly excited for. I'm talking about the sort of excitement that has you counting down the months, days, and hours until a game's release. One of these titles that sparked such a sense of want inside of me was Harvestella. Announced by Square Enix over the summer, it was a huge title for those interested in farming and JRPG elements. Fans from all ends of the cozy gaming sphere found it to be an experience that was worth the anticipation. From Stardew Valley players to Rune...

Harvestella attempts to create a unique gaming experience by combining farming and life sim elements with action RPG elements. The game suffers from an identity crisis both in regards to its narrative and gameplay. There's a great emphasis on interacting with villagers and helping them solve rather mundane problems with a story has more traditional JRPG leanings involving the saving the world from disaster. This correlates to the gameplay of balancing doing daily farm work, helping out with odd jobs around town while killing monsters and dealing with assorted events of an otherworldly nature. No element of Harvestella's gameplay is...

Harvestella may have unsightly character models and rote combat, but it offers a satisfying blend of farming sim and action RPG that scratches the itches it's supposed to.

An engrossing JRPG that uses the framing of a life sim to ground its twisty and overblown story.

Harvestella is a solid life simulation RPG, which has its farming system and intuitive mechanics as its biggest draws. While the presence of beautiful visuals, a flawless soundtrack, fluid overall mechanics, and a charismatic set of characters and narrative manages to set the game apart as one of the most charming, although not without its flaws, RPG experiences of the year.
