Kirby is the one Nintendo character that I keep going back to despite deep, deep disappointment. For me, a bitter old man shaking my cane at everything that says 4K or VR, the Kirby franchise seemed to peak in the Game Boy heydays, when riding a hamster was peak whimsy and the best new mechanic ever seen. Since those days, Kirby has had a series of interesting adventures, from some truly bizarre exploits as a golf ball, to the borderline maddening journey in a touch-only DS title. The last ma...

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a triumph and a new direction for Kirby games as a whole. While not everything they throw in works, this is a game you’ll enjoy playing, and then trying to get 100% completion on.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land marks the 30th anniversary of the ever-hungry pink squishy, proving itself a reliably safe choice for entertaining, all-ages 3D platforming in the classic Nintendo style.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is an excellent first foray into 3D for the pink puffball. There’s so much to see and do on this adorable adventure it’s hard to focus on just one thing for long, and it’ll keep fans new and old entertained for some time.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is easily the best Kirby game that's been made in the series and is an important step forward for the franchise, even if it may be a bit too linear for many's liking. The Mouthful ability and the full transition to 3D are two features that should be here to stay, as they open up the gameplay possibilities considerably.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land being a super easy game is to be expected as a low difficulty is really one of the Kirby franchise's defining traits, but that, combined with how short it is, may leave some fans feeling somewhat unsatisfied. However, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a consistently entertaining, adorable, and clever little 3D platformer while it lasts, and it even has some surprising Kirby lore revelations thrown in for good measure. Despite its short length, Kirby and the Forgotten Land marks yet another must-play Switch exclusive, especially for fans of the franchise.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a huge step in a new direction for the series. Many fans will say that despite enjoying recent titles, the formula had been growing stale and repetitive especially after Star Allies. Forgotten Land at its core is still Kirby, and feels like the traditional adventure, but adding this extra layer to levels, exploration and combat opens up a whole new way to experience the journey like never before. It's not only utterly charming in that lovable Kirby way, it's also a fantastic look at the kind of new creative ideas we'll hopefully get to...

The horror of watching Kirby’s mouth contort over the chassis of a car cannot be overstated. We’ve watched the carnivorous pink puffball consume things many times his size before, but this is pushed to the extreme in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The latest Nintendo Switch exclusive, Forgotten Land uses body horror as a mechanic; developer HAL Laboratory calls it ‘Mouthful Mode.’ And there are many mouthfuls to be had for Kirbz in his proper 3D platforming debut, from vending machines, to supply containers, to entire sets of stairs. Fortunately, while the mascot’s appetite may be insatiable, this new adventure...

Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s simplicity is its greatest asset as well as its greatest weakness. It makes it a fun and simple platformer filled with great copy abilities and a drive to work towards upgrading them all into cooler and more deadly versions. But it won’t likely have the staying power of some of the franchise’s earlier entries either. It’s a AAA Switch game though made by Nintendo, so surely it’s fun and will have its fans nonetheless.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is fun, relaxing, and challenging all at once. Kirby’s first major leap into 3D is an incredible success, with new mechanics and altered gameplay providing a familiar-yet-unique experience for any fan of the series. Forgotten Land provides incredible foundations for the future of 3D Kirby games, and one can only hope that HAL will continue to build upon them.

Kirby fans are nothing if not patient. Nintendo franchises first started making the leap to 3D over 25 years ago, but while the likes of Mario, Link, and Samus got to stretch their legs in the third dimension, Kirby has stuck to charming yet simple 2D platformers and the occasional quirky experiment like Kirby Canvas Curse and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Some of those games were a lot of fun, and yet, Kirby fanatics couldn’t help but dream about what it might be like if the pink puffball got his own Mario 64 moment.

Three decades after floating into a Game Boy Dream Land, Kirby has finally expanded to full 3D with a combat-centric platformer that successfully transitions into an extra dimension. Kirby and the Forgotten Land takes the established swallow-and-fight formula from the traditionally 2D series and follows the Super Mario 3D World structure, with a healthy dose of inspiration from Crash Bandicoot, to create something delectable, as Kirby scoffs up burgers, donuts, ice creams… and cars.

Kirby as a franchise hits thirty this year. He may not have as many strong titles under his belt as its Nintendo counterpart Mario, but it persists alone due to its cute charm, passion and sense of pure fun. Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, the next mainline adventure for the pink-massed mascot, is no exception. Filled to the brim with stuff to do, a gorgeous art style and some of the strongest gameplay yet, our hero won’t just get their time in the sun due to the sun-kissed island setting, b...

Nintendo’s insatiable pink mascot finally has his first full-featured 3D adventure with Kirby and the Forgotten Land. After being sucked into a mysterious vortex (oh, how the tables have turned), he finds himself transported to what looks to be an unknown post-apocalyptic world. By building upon his old bag of tricks and adding successful new gimmicks like Mouthful Mode, Kirby makes a fantastic transition to the third dimension.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a great big colourful joyride of an adventure for our little pink pal. This first fully three dimensional mainline entry in the franchise is bursting at the seams with fun and inventiveness, managing to transpose everything we know and love about past Kirby games to this all-new arena whilst adding plenty of delightful new aspects as it goes. Mouthful Mode is just as daftly entertaining as it looked in the trailers, each and every level is packed full of secrets and dripping in wonderful detail, and there are enough side activities, collectibles and co-op...

Kirby games don’t change much from one installment to the next. Instead, players are treated to a constantly evolving core formula, one that never fails to entertain. Kirby and the Forgotten Land continues this tradition, giving players a few new bells and whistles to spice up the usual hits. Conversely, those bells and whistles are bigger and brighter than they’ve been in years. Even with my jaded outlook on Kirby games, I was pleasantly surprised by what Forgotten Land had to offer.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a truly magical game that amounts to what could be the best franchise entry in decades. Even if its level themes and puzzle elements call back to concepts longtime fans will have seen before, the execution is charming and polished to an absolute shine. The oddities of Mouthful Mode alone are well worth the price of admission. If you can overlook linear levels and occasionally forced backtracking, this might be one of the best games of 2022 so far.
