While I doubt it will convince those bored of LEGO games otherwise, LEGO DC Super-Villains is a fun entry into the series that embraces its evil side for something a little more interesting than normal.

A neat continuation of the LEGO DC series, Super-Villains offers a neat twist in casting your custom character and a range of iconic faces from the comic books as the protagonists in a raucously fun story. Yes, it's the same old LEGO game that you'll have played several times before, but damn it, it's still good. And indeed, good to be bad.

I want to like this game, but the same bugs keep coming up time and time again in these LEGO games, which made me dread playing it. Get LEGO Batman 2: DC Super-Heroes, and wait for a sale.

LEGO DC Super-Villains does little to distinguish itself from past LEGO games, to the point that it still features some of the franchise's trademark technical issues and glitches. It's not revolutionary in any sense of the word and playing more than one level at a time may result in extreme boredom. However, its huge roster of playable characters is impressive and its focus on villains helps things feel at least a little fresh. I'm ultimately sad to see that I have grown out of a franchise I once loved, with underlying problems that I may have not noticed as a child building on top of one another to make LEGO DC Super-Villains much less enjoyable than I thought it would be. Lego DC Super Villains continues the trend of recent Lego games looking fantastic. I love that that each minifig and build looks as if it was made from real Lego. Each iconic character is made even more realistic through the game’s top-notch voicework. Legendary voice talent like Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Tara Strong, and Michael Rosenbaum all voice the characters that they’re known for, and they do it perfectly. Also as a Reverse Flash fanboy, I was immensely excited to hear C. Thomas Howell return as the Flash’s greatest rival.

Overall Lego DC Super-Villains is a solid entry into the lexicon of Lego and DC adventure-puzzle games. There’s a ton of family friendly content that will keep kids busy for hours and entertain their adult counterparts as well. Fans of the DCU will enjoy unlocking their favorite characters and putting them through the paces. But, there needs to be more polish on a lot of the more subtle aspects of the overall game. LEGO DC Super-Villains is definitely one of the best in the series, with many improvements that not only build on the strengths of the previous titles but also fixes some of the issues they faced. The massive change to player-created characters and the star-studded voice cast makes the game significantly more enjoyable and offers much more replayability than previous titles. LEGO DC Super-Villains may very well end up becoming the benchmark for future games in the franchise.

Momentum is a powerful force – just ask anyone who’s been on the receiving end of one of Superman’s flying kicks. On a more grounded level, the impulse to continue with what’s worked in the past can make a creative endeavor feel stale, whether we’re talking about superhero movies, comic books, or video games. Lego DC Super-Villains isn’t reimagining the core of the Lego games, but TT Games has clearly learned from recent missteps. The result is one of the best (and baddest) games that the studio has released.
