The final edition of Mafia caused much excitement among the fans – after all, the studio known for problematic Mafia 3 tackles a legend. The final result is more than pleasing, although not without a few blemishes – still, Hangar 13 shows how it's done.

All this time, the first Mafia was the best of the trio. It just took a phenomenal effort from Hangar 13 to do it justice with Mafia: Definitive Edition. This feels like the rare necessary remake that elevates and builds upon the original. It’s truly an offer you can’t refuse.

A real remaster that thoroughly updates an 18-year-old title into a proper next-gen game, and actually makes it better than the original.

Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Mafia: Definitive Edition features excellent performances from its new cast, a fantastic driving model, and a beautiful and authentic city oozing with 1930s atmosphere like overfilled cannoli. It’s hobbled slightly by its fairly vanilla third-person combat – and it arguably wastes the potential of its entirely overhauled world by not crafting a few new ways t...

As the title infers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is indeed the definitive version of the classic game, this time with completely redone visuals and updated gameplay that makes the game feel like it could have released today as a brand new game and few would have known the difference.

Relive the rise and fall of Tommy Angelo.

Mafia: Definitive Edition’s gorgeous open world is weakened by its mediocre campaign and flat combat mechanics. Driving through the bustling streets and open countryside of Lost Heaven in classic vehicles is fun enough at low or high speeds, and the story, while rushed, does ultimately put players in cool locations and situations. But without any unique storylines or exciting on-foot gameplay to k...

Mafia: Definitive Edition may not be the best remake ever made but it is a great reminder of what made the original so great.

If you’re hoping for a sombre tale of lives brought low by the touch of darkness, my advice would be to go for a ride and take in the sights instead.

Those looking for a nostalgia trip will find it here, but there are some huge asterisks to consider before diving in. Mafia: Definitive Edition is just right for those looking to kill a few evenings before the fall's bigger games start rolling in, or those that have fond memories of the franchise. It's got a pile of problems to sort out, but at the same time, it scratches an itch that few other ga...

The Mafia series is critically underrated, overshadowed by the bombastic Grand Theft Auto. Whereas the GTA games’ plots are driven by humor and social commentary, Mafia takes a more historically grounded approach to open-world gangster gameplay. When Mafia 3 launched to lukewarm reviews, I feared that the series would be forgotten, but 2K Games is giving it another shot with Mafia Trilogy.
