If you’re hoping for a sombre tale of lives brought low by the touch of darkness, my advice would be to go for a ride and take in the sights instead.

Debuting back in 2002, the original Mafia is now available for modern consoles as a remake so let's go back to the '30s and join the mob.

As the title infers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is indeed the definitive version of the classic game, this time with completely redone visuals and updated gameplay that makes the game feel like it could have released today as a brand new game and few would have known the difference.

All this time, the first Mafia was the best of the trio. It just took a phenomenal effort from Hangar 13 to do it justice with Mafia: Definitive Edition. This feels like the rare necessary remake that elevates and builds upon the original. It’s truly an offer you can’t refuse.

It's easy to forget that, once upon a time in a just and equal United States of America, Italians were not considered white. The same goes for the Irish, of course, and essentially anyone who had not already been assimilated into the culture. When put into this context, it's easy to see how the Italian mafia first came to be - when confronted with all doors of opportunity firmly closed in your face, the next logical step seems to be a life of crime. That's exactly where Tommy Angelo finds himself in Mafia: Definitive Edition. A man just trying to...

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven originally released in 2002, and was groundbreaking in its cinematic narrative and approach to its open-world environment. However, a lot has changed in the past 18 years, and the original Mafia hasn’t aged all that well. Fortunately, Hanger 13, developer of Mafia III, knew that it was time this classic got a bit of a facelift for a modern audience. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a true remake, recreating the original game from the ground-up. The remake adds mor...

The Mafia franchise again presents one of the medium's best-written stories, though the series still stumbles on building something special around that story.

Mafia: Definitive Edition’s gorgeous open world is weakened by its mediocre campaign and flat combat mechanics. Driving through the bustling streets and open countryside of Lost Heaven in classic vehicles is fun enough at low or high speeds, and the story, while rushed, does ultimately put players in cool locations and situations. But without any unique storylines or exciting on-foot gameplay to keep the player invested, and a restrictive focus on missions over open world exploration, there’s little here that stands out for those who don’t already have a fascination with mafia stories or mid-twentieth century history. For all the...

Mafia: Definitive Edition may not be the best remake ever made but it is a great reminder of what made the original so great.

Given the fluid definitions applied to gaming remasters, reboots, remakes, and re-imaginings, it can be difficult to know exactly what you’re getting into when you fire up a fresh take on an old favorite.

Mafia Definitive Edition feels like a relic from a generation gone by, and I absolutely adore it. I have been on something of a mob period binge of late, with the epic marathon that is The Irishman provoking a rewatch of The Godfather and Part 2. It has tickled a fancy that few games can itch, especially this generation, and a full ground up remake of 2002’s Mafia is exactly what I was jonesing for.

With a gorgeous graphical overhaul and smoother gameplay, Hangar 13 delivers what a remake should. Just don't expect as much content as a modern open-world game.

The final edition of Mafia caused much excitement among the fans – after all, the studio known for problematic Mafia 3 tackles a legend. The final result is more than pleasing, although not without a few blemishes – still, Hangar 13 shows how it's done.

Hangar 13 has retouched every single aspect of the original Mafia, expanding the story, refining the gameplay, and wrapping it with an absolutely phenomenal new look and sound, elevating it to an entirely new and modern level. It’s good to be part of the family once more.

Those looking for a nostalgia trip will find it here, but there are some huge asterisks to consider before diving in. Mafia: Definitive Edition is just right for those looking to kill a few evenings before the fall's bigger games start rolling in, or those that have fond memories of the franchise. It's got a pile of problems to sort out, but at the same time, it scratches an itch that few other games can.

A real remaster that thoroughly updates an 18-year-old title into a proper next-gen game, and actually makes it better than the original.

The Mafia series is critically underrated, overshadowed by the bombastic Grand Theft Auto. Whereas the GTA games’ plots are driven by humor and social commentary, Mafia takes a more historically grounded approach to open-world gangster gameplay. When Mafia 3 launched to lukewarm reviews, I feared that the series would be forgotten, but 2K Games is giving it another shot with Mafia Trilogy.

Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Mafia: Definitive Edition features excellent performances from its new cast, a fantastic driving model, and a beautiful and authentic city oozing with 1930s atmosphere like overfilled cannoli. It’s hobbled slightly by its fairly vanilla third-person combat – and it arguably wastes the potential of its entirely overhauled world by not crafting a few new ways to utilise more of it – but it’s still a successful rejuvenation of the best story in the series to date, and one that can now stand beside 2016’s Mafia III as an equal, rather than a quaint but...
