Intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran receives a distress signal from a wrecked frigate in orbit around planet Tallon IV. Upon investigation, the frigate reveals itself to be a Space Pirate research vessel home to terrifying genetic experiments using the mysterious Phazon substance. There, Samus encounters her nemesis, Meta Ridley, whom she pursues to the surface of Tallon IV. It’s up to her alone to explore the planet’s interconnected regions, investigate its dark secrets, and end the intergalactic threat posed by Phazon.

Metroid Prime has long been considered one of the crowning achievements of Nintendo’s GameCube library. The series’ seamless transition to the first-person genre was defined by its frenetic action, massively explorable environments, clever puzzles, and daunting boss encounters. However, the subsequent two decades have worn on the original release, but much like Samus by the end of each game, Metroid Prime Remastered brings the title back to full power.

Metroid Prime Remastered was recently shadow-dropped at a February Nintendo Direct to a great surprise. It was a momentous, majestic moment that can only occur for a game as prestige as the long-awaited re-release of a Nintendo and Retro Studios title that spawned a genre revitalisation. Finally getting to the game myself in this new form, I now too understand and am utterly captivated by Metroid Prime’s magic.

Samus is back and looking better than ever. Of course, Nintendo’s iconic space bounty hunter had already graced the Switch with 2021’s superb Metroid Dread – but for many fans, Metroid Prime is the real deal. This was the game where she made her transition to 3D, and one which has never been bettered.

Metroid Prime Remastered is an amazing update to a classic game. Despite some remaining issues like clunky combat and platforming, the new control scheme and visual updates make this a must-play in the Switch’s library, even for those who didn’t enjoy the original. This is how you update a game for modern audiences.

Already a masterstroke of design and execution on original release, Metroid Prime Remastered goes one better in cementing Retro's debut Metroid outing as one of gaming's greatest evolutions of a series. Still as brilliant to replay all these years later, now with added customization and improved technical details that are unmatched on the Switch at present. It may not ease us of Prime 4's ongoing absence, in the same way Dread so wonderfully did. In fact if anything, in a somewhat bizarre and unintended turn of events, Nintendo may just have reignited that longing for a fourth entry in Retro's...

As a whole, Metroid Prime Remastered is a reminder of Retro Studio's masterful game-making abilities, but also how great a 3D Metroid game can be. The present and future are both very clearly bright for the Metroid franchise down at that little studio in Austin, TX. After years of stagnation, the Metroid Prime series now feels fresher than ever.

Metroid Prime Remastered is the gold standard for how to remaster an old game. Retro Studios have earned a reputation as one of the best game developers in the business, perfecting the balance between nostalgia and modern game development. Fans of the original Metroid Prime and newcomers to the franchise alike are in for an absolute treat.

Metroid Prime Remastered sees Samus exploring the expansive Tallon IV, a planet in the same solar system as the original Metroid's Zebes, after encountering genetically modified creatures aboard a derelict Zebesian Space Pirate ship in Tallon IV's orbit. Hoping to thwart the Space Pirates and discover the source of Phazon, the material being used to rapidly increase the size and strength of various creatures, Samus scours the planet's surface, magma-filled caverns, abandoned ruins, research facilities, and more. Though the series' signature story progression remains largely intact, Metroid Prime Remastered is distinct from the quick, occasionally terrifying side-scrolling of Metroid Dread...

I have to say that, for the most part, remakes and remasters of older Nintendo titles have been massively disappointing on the Switch. The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection was embarassing, the vast majority of Wii U re-releases were just mere ports with little to no improvements, and the Skyward Sword remaster, while good, was extraordinarily expensive, and not at all worth its price. Nintendo wasn’t delivering in this front, while other companies were going overboard with fantastic rema...

With Metroid Prime Remastered, the seemingly impossible has been achieved: a masterpiece has been made even better. The minor issues we have with the motion controls and the occasional visual hiccup pale in comparison to the enhancements that have been made here. The visual improvements are extensive, right through to the minor details, and it all comes together to create one of the best-looking games on Switch, remaster or not. The new twin-stick control setup works flawlessly for both veterans and newcomers, but if you're itching to go back to the original GameCube controls, that option is there too. With...
