In the grand scheme of things, I generally feel like sports games get a bit of a bad rap. Maybe it’s a false dichotomy of the geeks versus jocks. Do people think that sports games are inherently bone-headed? In my mind sports games are such an interesting fusion of ideas. It’s a game genre where skill, strategy, and luck meet. Any play is only as good as the plan behind it and the ability to execute it. But there is a lot of chaos that ensures that luck is an integral part. So in this spi...

“Take me out to the ballgame!” Actually, no. You’re supposed to stay isolated. “Take me out to the crowd!” DEFINITELY not. “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack…” Only if they’ve been properly handled. “I don’t care if I never get back!” You should REALLY get away from those crowds, as soon as possible. “Let me root, root, root for the home team…” Unless your team is in Seattle. “If they don’t win it’s a shame.” But it’s Seattle, were you really expecting them to win? “For it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out…” Did you miss the clanging garbage...

MLB The Show 20 is not a paradigm shift or major reinvention of the franchise. It is last year’s game with another coat of polish and mostly welcome additions and adjustments. It is the quintessential late-generation console sports game — very solid at all the things it attempts to do as a result of years of iteration. Its performance shortcomings can be chalked up to aging PS4 hardware and its game mode omissions are easy to forgive in the face of so much content. If this proves to be the final Sony-exclusive baseball simulation that we ever get, the development...

Unlike the actual MLB season, which has since been put on hold due to current world events, MLB The Show 20 has launched relatively smoothly, bringing “America’s past-time” back to gamers’ living rooms. As it has been the past few years, MLB The Show 20 is another iteration of one of the best sports franchises around. Like usual, its strong gameplay, continuous improvements, and a plethora of content make MLB The Show 20 the place to be this spring.

Baseball in real life is often criticized for its slow pace, but I like its flow in MLB 20. It’s different from most other sports in that the moment-to-moment experience isn’t continuous, but I enjoy the built-in tension before, during, and after crucial plays in MLB The Show 20. The action goes from 0 to 60 with seemingly routine throws, pitches, and at-bats because the gameplay is demanding but tight. Every inning has these pressure-cooker moments that culminate in triumph or defeat.

I’ll be upfront with you immediately and tell you I am not a baseball fan nor have I ever played a MLB: The Show. However, I wanted to test out one of the highest rated sports titles around to see what the fuss was about. I went in with an open mind, learned a ton about the sport, and ended up enjoying what I played. This review will be coming from a complete newbie, which I hope appeals to some readers who are in a similar situation as myself and want to hear from a “non fan”.

Much like the grand old game it’s inspired by, Sony’s venerable MLB The Show franchise has long been a dependable if somewhat predictable presence. That may be about to change, as it’s been announced the series will officially be going multiplatform next year, but before that happens MLB The Show 20 is here to close out the series’ long unbroken run of PlayStation exclusivity.

MLB The Show 20 feels very balanced across all game modes, is loaded with things to do, and is well set up for the future. There is something for everyone whether you want to play offline or online, alone or with others and it leaves me wondering yet again how San Diego Studio will try to match or outdo themselves next year.

Late generation sports releases are usually at the top of their game when nearing the end of the current console generation and MLB The Show 20 continues that trend with a walk off home run in the final PlayStation only entry in the series.

MLB The Show 20 doesn't rewrite the script, but its numerous tweaks to gameplay, modes, and options makes it the best baseball game around.

In what feels like a minor but noticeable update, MLB The Show 20 doesn’t break what wasn’t broken. Developer Sony San Diego has tweaked and tightened everything that was presented in MLB The Show 19, and as a result, playing baseball on a console has never been this fluid. But even with the excellent new Showdown mode, longtime fans may be just a little turned off by the lack of big new changes. That said, those who haven’t picked up an MLB The Show since 17 or 18 will absolutely find that MLB The Show 20 is the best place...
