From WB Games and NetherRealm Studios comes a new expansion for Mortal Kombat 11 that contains a decent amount of content.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath adds to an already incredible story experience. If story isn't your jam though, then it might be hard to find value.

While this is a good DLC story-wise, there was a lot more to be expected in terms of other content - especially considering its hefty price.

Though technically released for free alongside Aftermath, the Friendship finishers deserve a shout-out for how creative and silly they are. From the Joker being interrupted by a stray Batarang to Kitana playing patty-cake with the sadly-absent Mileena, there’s a ton of fanservice and straight-up goofy imagery shoved into each Friendship. It’s a good addition to the base game, as I could watch Robocop dance all day. The new versions of the Deadpool and Soul Chamber stages are brilliant as well, though my favorite new stage has to be the Retrocade, which swaps backgrounds every round between a number of classic Mortal Kombat stages.

Weighing in at a hefty £34.99, Aftermath feels a bit pricey, despite how good the content is. The Friendships, the new stages and the balance update are all free downloads, so what you’re really paying for is a very short campaign and three extra characters. It’s going to be a very hard sell to casual fans of the series. The package which includes the base game definitely feels like the better deal weighing in around £49.99, but those that own it already might feel a little hard done by.

Mortal Kombat 11 is already one of the most solid entries in the series. Even if we set aside its gorgeous graphics and fantastic balancing of characters, it proceeds to give us a movie-quality narrative and provides a gameplay experience accessible for gamers of all experience levels. Adding characters like Joker and Spawn was a great move and one we had seen before in the franchise, but the combination of features delivered in this first expansion pack (a phrase I haven’t had the delight of saying in a VERY long time) only makes the game better and gives you even more for your dollar.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a really great expansion to an already amazing fighting game. All of the playable characters are solid additions that feel pretty unique and the added story is another fun time traveling ride with a notable performance from Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. If you love Mortal Kombat 11, I highly recommend Aftermath. But if you're strapped on cash, maybe hold off for a little bit.

Since the Mortal Kombat series received a soft reboot in 2011, it has stood shoulder to shoulder with the most elite fighting franchises thanks to superb 2D fighting mechanics and consistent post-launch support. However, NetherRealm Studios’ Fatality-filled fighter reigns supreme in its story mode. Since the reboot, the series has delivered three cinematic stories that have expanded the franchise’s universe in interesting and absurd ways. Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath adds a new tale that picks up right where the base game left off, giving you yet another exciting adventure featuring the expanding cast of Mortal Kombat characters.

NetherRealm has supported its last four games with a healthy amount of premium and free DLC. From stages to characters to finishers, each has had a healthy flow of content over the years. But the Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath expansion marks a new era for the team, as it adds in story-based DLC in addition to those aforementioned standbys. And while it’s familiar and rooted within what the base game already did, it manages to be well done enough to justify its existence.

If the zany story started in Mortal Kombat 11 was the main course, then Aftermath is the desert that makes the entire ordeal completely worthwhile. Not only do we get an epic conclusion, but also three new characters to play with and several amazing stages. Sure it may be a bit overpriced, but if there’s one thing to be said here, it’s that Netherrealm Studios really has mastered their craft, both with the storytelling and with crafting an enjoyable fighting title.

Already the king of the story mode in the fighting game genre, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath adds even more enjoyable content with a DLC character focused plot. Adding in three new DLC characters with Fujin, Sheeva, and RoboCop only sweetens the pot in this must own package that all Mortal Kombat fans should experience.
