Another top notch interactive documentary from Digital Eclipse, which explores the early days of Mortal Kombat in enjoyably forensic detail.

As a long-time fan, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection feels like the ultimate compilation. Revisiting Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, one of my personal favorites, scratched that nostalgia itch in all the right ways. Unfortunately, noticeable audio issues and input lag do mar the experience.

Digital Eclipse’s documentaries / compilations have been outstanding so far, but one thing all of the previous three instances of their series had in common was the fact the games were a bit too old and a bit too limited. That’s not to say they were compilations on bad games (dude, please, one of them was about Tetris, arguably the most perfect game of all time), but they were almost always about smaller arcade games from the 80s, maybe some games in the early 90s. It was time for the Gol...

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection does a lot of things well, but its peculiar launch online choices and varying game quality might make it a tougher sell for those who aren’t familiar with earlier Mortal Kombat games. Still, there are a few great titles included in this collection, and an impressive amount of bonus content, so diehard Mortal Kombat fans are in for a treat.

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is a dream come true for Mortal Kombat fans. There are multiple versions of every Mortal Kombat game, up to, and including, Mortal Kombat 4. The package has exhaustive extras, including a long documentary about the history of the series. Almost every game has online play with rollback netcode. And Mortal Kombat Trilogy has its load times and bugs fixed, so players can have every character in one game. My only complaints are minor, and that some of the games are awful. But I’m so glad those awful games are included, for completion’s sake and for nostalgic reasons. If you have any love for Mortal Kombat, the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is a must-buy. It’s arguably the best retro game collection of all-time.

As video game franchises go, few have a more fascinating history than Mortal Kombat. Emerging from a ragtag team at an arcade-first developer, the blood-soaked fighter quickly became a phenomenon that rivaled one of its chief inspirations, Street Fighter, before being embroiled in controversy that reached the U.S. Senate. Digital Eclipse, a studio that has emerged as the preeminent compilation team, delivers an incredible collection of early-era Mortal Kombat titles along with a documentary t...

Another home run for those wizards at Digital Eclipse whom I hope will never stop weaving their game preservation magic, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection isn't just a pitch-perfect trip down memory lane, it's a love letter, a tantalising peeling back of the curtain, a look behind the scenes of one of the most legendary and landmark videogame franchises ever made. If you have even the smallest modicum of fondness for gaming's original bad boy, then the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is as essential as essential can be.

Mortal Kombat has been around for so long, it's easy to take it for granted. NetherRealm's newer fighting games have hit so consistently, setting the standard for what fighting games could be in terms of competitive contests and single-player stories. Older generations may have forgotten the series' humble beginnings, while younger players may not even be aware of them at all. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, from Atari and Digital Eclipse, tells the story of the franchise's earliest days and does so in a way that's informative, honest, and fun. The games may not be what they once were, but they're still a blast to revisit, some of them made better by a few slight quality-of-life tweaks.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is an absolutely incredible collection of the classic games with some great quality of life features added to them. The documentary is a fascinating look into the history of the Mortal Kombat team and the development of the series. It's a shame that the online features are barebones as of now, but I think for old school Mortal Kombat fans, this collection is a dream come true and has personally reignited my love for this franchise.

The Mortal Kombat series has undergone numerous re-releases and ports over the years, particularly with the first few titles in the franchise, but these were largely released years ago. Prior to this point, only the more recent releases from the last decade or so are easily accessible on modern platforms due to a lack of backwards compatibility unless you bought an Arcade 1Up unit with them on it.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection contains some of the greatest and most iconic games in the Mortal Kombat franchise! These were the games that put the series on the map, challenged censorship, and paved the way for other fighting games. Despite the games being fantastic, the selection of titles feels bloated and unnecessary, while the features, while good, seem like an average offering.

MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAT! Bet you can hear the techno remix of that in your head right now. After Mortal Kombat 1 did a lot of things right, yet failed to hold the interest of the fighting community due to some flaws, it’s time to rediscover the “klassics” once more. And not just the original trilogy, for once. This is XboxEra’s review for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, tested on Xbox Series X!
