The need to balance energy levels, uncertainty around income, and even the uncertainty around what parts you will have access to rob the game slightly of its potential fun for me. As it stands, there is almost certainly a notable inbuilt metagame for those who want to play through the game. Precise weapons that mainly guarantee damage, combined with quick recharge times, will provide the most reward, even though they may not always be the most fun way to play. As an FPS, Mothergunship and its amazing gun crafting is an improvement on what came before. As a roguelike, the game fails at the basics, providing an overly randomized system and lackluster progression.

As it stands, though, Mothergunship is still a game worth a look. The gun customization, even with the limitations the levels impose, is still a blast to play around with. The character interactions are also a cherry on top, adding a spark of charm that games like this really need to stand out from the crowd.

The game doesn’t quite end when all of the story missions are over. Other than the endless mode (which is where the gun combos can really get crazy), there’s an endgame that allows the player to keep going, leveling up and facing harder and harder ships. There are also a slew of planned updates, including more guns and two-player co-op, but what is present at launch feels like a solid foundation. There are some odd and annoying design decisions, and it can feel frustrating to rarely get to really let loose with the gun creations, but damn if I don’t...

But for a dash of repetition, both in gameplay after a long period and the slightly disappointing variety of enemies, Mothergunship is really a great game. The story takes a back seat to the gameplay, so if you’re looking for a story focused experience you’re in the wrong place. However if an FPS rogue-lite with gameplay in the vein of Quake and the ability to create a gun that shoots both lightning and floating grenades is your thing, you could do a lot worse than Mothergunship.

Mothergunship has its problems. The repetitive environments and enemy types, long load times, and forgettable dialogue are its most unlikeable attributes. Luckily, its diverse gameplay, fun and frenetic shooting, and deep gun crafting make Grip Digital’s latest enjoyable and replayable. Mothergunship is worth seeing through once but I’m sure you’ll want to tackle the campaign at least one more time.

Once the campaign’s over, Mothergunship offers more difficult levels to grind. Given how they’re just about the right length, dipping in for short sessions of fast-paced action continues to feel satisfying. But even so, the repeating room layouts and enemy compositions don’t take long to make themselves noticed, adding an unwelcome sense of familiarity that I couldn’t really shrug off. More stuff is said to come later down the line, and that has the potential to solve this issue, but at the moment, while Mothergunship provides opportunity for glorious, fast-paced action, its novelty isn't there for the long run.

Mothergunship feels like it was created in a ‘Random Video Game Generator’. Procedurally generated levels? Yes. First-person shooter? Yes. Bullet-hell shooter? Somehow, also yes. Against all odds, however, it works.
