Not A Hero is a well made game that skewers the political elements it takes aim at with some excellent game play to top it off.

Translating cover shooters into 2D makes for a good mix of contemporary and classic sensibilities. It’s nice to play a shooter where avoiding enemy bullets is a bit more necessary and I like the tools Not a Hero provides with its slick cover system, mechanically varied cast, and constant chain of slide kicks and executions.

Aptly titled, Not a Hero is a charismatic, side-scrolling shoot-'em-up in which you massacre mobsters, thugs, and other underworld villains in the name of BunnyLord – an anthropomorphic purple rabbit who is currently running for mayor. Phew.

If the game's origins as a Clickteam prototype are sometimes evident, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's one idea done well, consistent and compact. As Bunnylord might say – Not A Hero might not be cooking with floppin' sexy gas on all cylinders but it's a facemurdering good time nonetheless.

Thankfully, Not A Hero makes players want to take on all comers. Roll7 has made an addictive, if occasionally frustrating, title that packs plenty of punch, and the satisfaction felt when completing a level is terrific. Not A Hero may not constantly tickle the funny bones, but its lighthearted satirical moments and thrilling combat make the game something special for players after a challenge.

Not A Hero is another great title from Roll7, and another must play title for fans of games that make you pull out your hair with their difficulty, but give you the best feeling imaginable when you clear a level. The writing certainly gets a little too flavourful for its own good, but it still does a great job of connecting the experience and making you want to play the next level right away. It’s...

Fast and frantic, Not a Hero provides some serious satisfaction when things are running on all cylinders. There's nothing lack diving through windows and taking out bad guys, even if it is classic 8-bit sprites. The humor feels a bit forced at times, but the action wins out in providing a ton of fun.

Not A Hero stumbles with its writing and forced humour, but is ultimately an enjoyable game thanks to some great gunplay.

A fun, funny, and wonderfully gory 2D shooter, but it’s not quite as tightly designed as OlliOlli and certainly lacks the same longevity.

If you desire power then you need to take it by force. This may not be entirely true, but BunnyLord sure thinks it is. So, why not aid him in his quest for world domination and see what happens? Maybe he's a good guy under all of his murderous urges.

An enjoyable but flawed game then, Not A Hero is commendable for what it achieves, but disappoints with its preventable shortcomings. Offering an absorbing and skilful challenge, fans of titles such as Hotline Miami will find Not A Hero‘s gameplay similarly cathartic, but those without patience will soon become bored of its repetitive nature. Crude, humorous, and action-packed, there’s a lot to li...

I don't know what a chocolate and monkey milkshake would taste like, but it somehow sums up Not a Hero perfectly.
