Resogun

It’ll be easy to overlook Resogun – Sony’s welcome gift to PS4 buyers who join PlayStation Plus.

Resogun is a satisfying arcade-style game with a next-gen look and feel — the ideal system launch game. It’s an eye-searing blur of a loop that you’ll be happy to jump into again and again. Don’t miss it.

From the makers of the fantastic Super Stardust HD, Resogun offers a twist on classic twin-stick shooters by adopting a cylindrical field of play. The narrative is based upon an alien race called the Keepers, who are imprisoning humans. It’s your goal, then, to destroy any and everything that you see, while snatching up any remaining mortals.

With some deceptively simple changes, Housemarque took a genre nearly as old as videogaming itself and made a tense, challenging, and excellent shooter. It may be short, but its addictive cycle of cylindrical shooter gameplay, great looks, and catchy music make it worth replaying in endless pursuit of that high score on the leaderboard. Resogun is an excellent shoot ‘em up and the best launch title for the PS4. If you have the system, you need to get it.

Sony’s PS4 has finally launched and there are quite a few games to check out.  One such game is a Resogun, a downloadable title on PSN.  It is free for PSN+ members, and should you not be a member it will cost you $14.99.  The reason I bring this up is that given the “free” nature of the game for PSN+ members I had some serious doubts that this would be that good of a title, but much to my surprise I found out otherwise.

Resogun might seem innocuous at first, but once players peel back the layers, they will see that Resogun is a challenging, yet rewarding, space shooter with a fantastic sense of style. Granted, some players might not find the challenge worth it, or simply find that this very niche genre is not for them, but those who live for these types of unforgiving shooters will count Resogun among the top tier. The game is free to all PS Plus subscribers, and a 30-day trial comes with every PS4 console, which should be reason enough to give Resogun a chance. You may be happy you did.

One problem that goes along with the launch of a new console is that the biggest games are sometimes months or years away. Resogun attempts to deliver a small game that invites repeated playthroughs and inspires competition while you are waiting for the heavy hitters. Geometry Wars admirably served this role when the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, and while Resogun does provide some quick thrills it won’t keep players coming back.
