Skullgirls Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
While light on content, the core play in Skullgirls works beautifully on numerous levels. Astounding animation dresses up its solid basics and the roster provides plenty of possibilities for strategies and play styles. And for those looking for real competition, both local and online multiplayer run smoothly.
An "ample" review of the game Skullgirls.
For fighting fans, Skullgirls has a lot to get excited about. At first glance the short roster and slim mode variety (the functional yet bare-bones online mode is adequate but doesn't offer any new ideas worth mentioning) may seem like a turn-off, but the knockout presentation, with personality to spare, genre in-jokes, and phenomenal depth of play creates an extremely solid first outing for a new franchise. Even as a digital download, Skullgirls is a must play and can easily be put alongside heavy-hitters in the fighting genre. Casual fans looking to button-mash their way to victory should pr...
Skullgirls is not a game for everyone. It's a great stepping stone if you're looking to really improve on your overall fighting game skills, and it's a meticulously well-made effort in its own right.
Unfortunately the game is pretty lacking in content. All there is to do is the story, arcade, and versus modes. There is a pretty damn impressive training mode that slowly takes you through every detail of the game and I highly recommend starting with it if you’re somewhat inexperienced with fighting games. It only took a year for it to hit the PC and while it’s still a bit more technical than most fighters, it’s still enjoyable. Overall Skullgirls on Steam is somewhat superior that it’s console counterpart but not so much. It’s polished game in story, universe, characters, and art wise. It just falls a bit short in the game department due not having a way for players to ease into learning the game.
However this makes it hard to place. Judging it solely on how it lives up to older fighters, I’d say pretty well; judging it solely on its art-style, then the game is nothing short of phenomenal. However, when you bring in the facts that the story line is quite short for each character, the character feel doesn’t differ as much as their visual styles might suggest, and how difficult is to learn to play the damn thing, you realise that the games beauty may well be clouding your judgment.
