Slender: The Arrival Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Slender: The Arrival is a must-play for any horror fan who hasn't played it on PC. You may get frustrated with it at times, but overcoming any cheap moments makes beating each chapter and the overall game all the more rewarding. If you play it alone, you can easily get enough scares out of it for price, but we highly recommend that you play The Arrival with the company of a couple of friends, turn up the volume, and turn off the lights.

Slender: The Arrival manages to deliver some truly impressive scares, but you’ll have to wade through the muck of repetitive tasks and unfair enemies in order to experience them. I found more enjoyment in playing the free original installment, which delivers a powerful horror experience without the annoyances and filler. By trying to stretch the initial concept over five separate scenarios, Slender only succeeds in proving that some ideas are better left in the experimental phase.

Slender: The Arrival did manage to perform well on the switch and of course give me some truly great scares but let’s be honest. The Repetitive mechanics do start to take away from the scares and morph into frustration. The concept was great and I am impressed with how far the developers went but I think a different direction would have turned the tables.

There's almost certainly a great horror experience somewhere in all this Slender Man mythos but this isn't it. This is glorified Pac-Man in the dark.

The mythos of Slenderman shouldn’t be much of a mystery anymore. The abnormally tall creature with no discernible facial features and a rockin’ tuxedo has blown up in popularity these past couple of years. This is mostly due to popular web series Marble Hornets, but another thing that added to the creepy character’s popularity was a small game called Slender, which is now more commonly referred to as Slender: The Eight Pages. The name change coincided with the announcement of a new entry in the series, adding more to the previous instalment, which consisted of nothing but walking through a for...

If you want to be scared out of your mind for an hour or so, feel free to get Slender: The Arrival. If you consider that the only prerequisite for a horror game, it gets top marks. Trouble is video games have to have more than that, and this is where The Arrival falls down. Out of the six stages only the first is unique, otherwise the rest are based around the same “hunt for things while getting hunted” mechanic which you’ll be utterly tired of by the time you reach the game’s abrupt ...
