Sonic Origins is a fantastic celebration of 30 years of SEGA's spiky blue mascot, offering four of the best platformers money can buy and chucking in a bunch of great extras that long-time fans can appreciate. Regardless of where the Blue Blur head next, Sonic Origins is a reminder of just how damn good these timeless classics are.

Visually, Sonic Origins is quite sharp. It helps that the pixel art of each game has held up well, but it’s the new animated intros that truly stand out. These slick-looking cutscenes give a little extra context to the story, and look damn good while doing it.

Sonic Origins is an essential collection not only for any franchise fan with current or last-gen gaming hardware but also for anybody who appreciates tight gameplay with a banger soundtrack. Sonic is the ultimate "Animal With an Attitude" mascot still having major games released to this day, and while the franchise has had a tarnished reputation due to sub-par releases lately, it remains plucky and pushes forward, never losing sight of its roots.

Each Sonic game presented here in Sonic Origins has something that makes it stand out from the rest. But they all share a certain magic that means we return to them, time and time again, year after year; that’s why this collection exists, after all. And it’s thanks to this collection that yet more players, young and old, are going to be able to enjoy these classics. Hardcore Sonic fans will rue the music changes in Sonic 3, for sure, but everything else new or tweaked here is for the better. Sonic’s 3D offerings over the years have been sketchy at best, but as long as we can still enjoy his origins, we’ll love him regardless.

In many ways, Sonic Origins is tailor-made for those of us who grew up with the SEGA Genesis in the early to mid-90s. It brings me back to when I was a kid, tak

While fans often debate the merits of modern Sonic the Hedgehog video games, the consensus is that the ‘90s were the franchise’s most consistently great years. Sonic Origins gathers the four games most attributed to that notion, delivering a stellar group of classic titles at its core. But through several modernizations and updates, Sonic Origins makes a strong case for being the best official way to experience Sonic’s heyday in 2022.

Sonic Origins keeps the focus on the hedgehog's early core entries, polishing them up to a fine sheen and creating an addictive ecosystem around them that breathes new life into each title. There are a few missteps and grubby mechanics to forgive, but otherwise this is well worth diving into for old-school Sonic fans.

The classics are looking and feeling better than ever.

Sonic Origins is simply more of the same, which is both its greatest strength and weakness. On one hand, it’s a near-definitive way to experience four stone-cold classics that represent some of the highest peaks of Sonic's career. On the other, most of these games are already readily available and there aren’t many new features or additions to justify buying them yet again. If you don’t already have a reliable or convenient way of playing these games now, or this is genuinely your first time playing through them, then we’d say that Sonic Origins is the go-to way to experience Sonic’s 2D heyday. Otherwise, we’d encourage you to either wait for this to go on sale or just pass on it.

Look, I get it: with how pristine Sonic Mania ended up being, it’s pretty obvious that Sega themselves don’t want to make a brand new 2D Sonic game by themselves. Let Christian Whitehead do his thing and release it whenever he feels like. The only way they can still capitalize on the old (aka, good) Sonic formula is by re-releasing the Mega Drive and Sega CD games over and over again. We all laughed at Sonic Origins when it was first released, all due to its terrible tier system and DLC p...

Sonic Origins is a worthy celebration of the franchise's glory days.

Sonic Origins is not only an excellent trip down memory lane for fans of the series, it’s also the perfect entry point for those looking to play them for the very first time. The games are all as beautiful as ever and control like a dream. There are also a plethora of bonus goodies that celebrate the iconic artwork and music of the platforming series. While it’s easy to get caught up in arguments about the current direction of the Sonic IP, Sonic Origins is a refreshing reminder that the original games are among the best 2D platformers ever made.

For many fans, Sonic the Hedgehog’s brightest days remain back in 16-bit pixel form when he could just speed across 2D zones carefree. In other words Sonic Origins, a collection that brings together his definitive games before 3D’s march of progress has been a long time coming.

The games in Sonic Origins are among the best Sonic the Hedgehog titles in existence and this package is a great way to experience these games, especially for new fans who were introduced to the franchise by the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The people who already own these games in some other form won't find anything particularly worthy of a double-dip, as even the convenience of owning them all on a modern system is undercut by all of the original versions of the games being available on the Sega Genesis Classic collection. Those who don't already own the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games can get them in a neat package in Sonic Origins, with a few extra features to keep them interested after the credits have rolled.

Messy as it is, Sonic Origins is still a collection of the best 2D entries the franchise has to offer. It may not be as dense in content in comparison to prior compilations like Sonic Mega Collection or Sonic Gems Collection, but it does just enough to not get in the way of what made these games system sellers in their heyday. While I was hoping for an easy touchdown, this ended up being a fumble recovery instead. Hefty price tag be damned, new players deserve to see why people like me keep g...

A competent but flawed compilation of the four best Sonic the Hedgehog games, which adds a half-hearted modern twist to the classic games.

Sonic Origins works magic with Anniversary Mode, allowing you to play four classic Sonic games in widescreen. However, the speed bumps, ranging from features moved to DLC and a lack of great content, bring the fun to a crawl.

The games remain timeless classics, but the Sonic Origins wrapper leaves something to be desired.

June 22, 2022 Read Review

Sonic Origins does a lot right. It looks and sounds wonderful, all the games look as good as they always did if not better in some cases, and there's new stuff here for older fans to enjoy. Heck, there's even new courses for Blue Spheres fans. It looks the part of a collection that celebrates the best of Sonic, yet it doesn't manage to justify that price tag. These are all old games now, and the versions available here aren't all that much better than the originals. Considering that past Sonic collections offered more games for less money, it's hard to say that this one is worth it. Ultimately, Sonic Origins is a well-polished wrapper for old games that were, until recently, available at much lower prices. Unless one is a real super fan, this is a collection that’s better-grabbed on sale.

There are a ton of games in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. We’re talking dozens of titles scattered across multiple consoles and multiple decades. Sega is absolutely riddled with old Sonic games, is what I’m saying. Yet for some reason, every collection and compilation contains the same withered handful of titles. Sonic Origins is no exception to this strange phenomenon. Even so, this latest collection breaks new ground in the ‘selling you Sonic 2’ space. Is it enough to justify yet another purchase of these 4 classics? That depends on a few things.

Sonic the Hedgehog is like a 16-bit Skyrim: SEGA has re-released the Mega Drive classics on just about every platform you can think of, and it shows no sign of stopping. The latest effort is Sonic Origins, a collection that brings Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD to modern consoles under one banner. Even if we've all played these games a thousand times, there's still value in revisiting old-school favourites — and this compilation's extra bells and whistles present the quadrilogy in a fresh and interesting way.

With nothing new of any real substance, Sonic Origins is a reminder to fans why The Blue Blur has been a joke to the game industry for years.

July 1, 2022 Read Review

You’d be hard-pressed to find any games that have been re-released and rehashed as many times as Sega’s classic Sonic the Hedgehog titles. It’s difficult to name a platform they haven’t been ported to, from consoles to mobile devices, to your streaming stick, and a multitude of compilations featuring the hedgehog’s original adventures have been released over the years. Despite this, Sega is tapping into that Genesis nostalgia yet again with Sonic Origins.

While it's almost impossible not to have fun with Sonic Origins, it is easy to lament the missing features, neutered Sonic 3 soundtrack, and absence of the blue blur's outings on the Master System and Game Gear. Disappointing.

The upgrades to Sonic Origins, such as restored content and infinite lives, are few, and most have been covered by previous releases of these games or even fanmade options that could’ve been enjoyed with those ROMs from the Steam release. The only thing that I think this collection truly accomplishes is making some great games available on modern consoles, and that is the absolute bare minimum I can ask. These games—with the possible exception of Sonic 1—are great, and this is a perfectly playable version of them. Sadly, we’ve seen the potential of what a Classic Sonic collection could…

Sonic Origins arrived just in time for the worlds most famous Hedgehog’s 31st anniversary, collecting four of his most legendary adventures. This set contains the original Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic CD, the seminal Sonic 2 and for the first time in over ten years, my personal favourite, Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
