Spyro Reignited Trilogy Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Though some curious issues persist, there’s no denying that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a stunning effort that every platforming aficionado and fan alike should grab with both hands and not let go until every last gem is wrung out.
Style and substance make Spyro: Reignited Trilogy an incredibly compelling package, for fans and newcomers alike.
For many PlayStation gamers, Spyro is an iconic staple of the platform. Much like Crash Bandicoot, the purple dragon defined an era when games were switching from pixels to polygons. In fact, Insomniac was one of the first developers to really begin toying around with the idea of immersive 3D open-world games, setting the stage for PlayStation exclusives like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet and Clank to follow. Even Insomniac’s most recent work, Marvel’s Spider-Man, can be traced back to the studio’s roots in developing Spyro the Dragon 20 years earlier.
When the Crash Bandicoot N’Sane Trilogy released in 2017, many fans hoped we’d see the same treatment given to the adorable purple dragon, Spyro.
Toys for Bob has done a great job of filling Spyro’s first three adventures with such reinvigorated life. Worlds are packed to the brim with more detail, animations are consistently endearing, and the quality of life improvements make revisiting these once analog stick-less platformers a joy to play. They’re definitely easier thanks to some of those changes, but no less charming to play. It’s great to see Spyro’s return treated with such love and care, and I hope renewed interest in his past can light the way for his future.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a faithful recreation of the original three Spyro games for current gen consoles. Toys for Bob was able to get the look and feel of Spyro down while adding a cherry on top bundling it all together and creating a new and improved soundtrack.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a wonderful love letter to a classic series, keeping everything that made the original games what they were, but slapping on a fresh coat of paint for the HD era. There are a few creaking bones showing their age here and there, but only due to the developers’ desire to keep things as accurate as possible. The Switch version looks absolutely stunning and runs surprisingly well, so if you’re looking for a classic 3D platforming experience, you should definitely give this a look-in.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a fan’s dream. This heartfelt remake is bursting with colour, character and adventure, even if it has been developed with an cautious approach to reinvention. Though some might find its retro-fused action a little simplistic in this convoluted era of gaming, Spyro has the ability to entertain even the most cynical player with its wonderful worlds, slick design, and ability to spark the flames of nostalgia.
My final thoughts, then? Spyro Reignited Trilogy is great for its real target market: young children who have never played these games before. The unadulterated laid-back gameplay found in all three titles will captivate them, as will the bright colours and larger-than-life characters. The trilogy’s other target market – those who fondly remember the games from their youth – are also likely to enjoy it too, though eventually may tire of it once they realise there’s not much depth to it. It’s just collecting things in a range of different scenarios. And if you’ve never played a Spyro game befor...
There aren't a ton of games that can make a two-decade jump and remain unscathed, but Spyro Reignited Trilogy does just that. While it won't do anything to challenge the status quo of gaming, no one says it has to. This is a game made for you to unwind with and is a great pick-up-and-play game in between more time-intensive titles.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy retains the magic of what made the franchise such a hit in the late 90s and early 2000s. There’s a timelessness that lives in the core of the Spyro games, proving that the franchise can easily contend with other big names in the nostalgia wave. 20 years later, I’m delighted I can still experience the same feeling of wonder and awe in the games that defined my childhood.
