The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is an absolute pleasure and a strong continuation of Activision's commitment to remastering classic games. For those who grew up with or loved the old Spyro games, I can't imagine you won't find yourself engrossed in the collective quality of these remasters. For those new to the world of Spyro, this game is a winner even without its history. Plus, a very attainable set of achievements (or trophies) means you can earn yourself some rewards along the way.

I’ve become known for reviewing all of those nostalgia-fuelled remasterings of classic 3D platformers, so of course I managed to get my hands on an early copy

Taking off the nostalgia goggles for a moment, Toys For Bob have done a brilliant job in revamping a classic trilogy of games. In updating the visuals and tweaking the controls, they’ve stayed true to the source material and crafted an experience so involving that you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a brand new game. Initial viewings had me concerned that they might not be able to live up to the hype; but on playing the game, for the briefest moment I was eight years old again – and I enjoyed every minute of it.

After years of disappointing E3 conferences, you can dream no longer, because Toys for Bob makes it possible with Spyro Reignited Trilogy! Let the Gnorc torching begin!

Though some curious issues persist, there’s no denying that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a stunning effort that every platforming aficionado and fan alike should grab with both hands and not let go until every last gem is wrung out.

When the Crash Bandicoot N’Sane Trilogy released in 2017, many fans hoped we’d see the same treatment given to the adorable purple dragon, Spyro.

A ridiculously handsome, pitch-perfect remastered trilogy that no Spyro fan should miss.

For many PlayStation gamers, Spyro is an iconic staple of the platform. Much like Crash Bandicoot, the purple dragon defined an era when games were switching from pixels to polygons. In fact, Insomniac was one of the first developers to really begin toying around with the idea of immersive 3D open-world games, setting the stage for PlayStation exclusives like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet and Clank to follow. Even Insomniac’s most recent work, Marvel’s Spider-Man, can be traced back to the studio’s roots in developing Spyro the Dragon 20 years earlier.

Unlike Nintendo and SEGA, Sony never managed to find a true mascot for its PlayStation brand, and not for lack of trying. The two characters that mostly represent the first console ever made by the Japanese company are Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. Both the series' featuring these characters eventually went multi-platform, but there's no denying that the first entries in the series are the best ones ever made. Crash Bandicoot came back into the spotlight last year with the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and this year it's Spyro's turn with Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Developed by Toys for Bob, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is an excellent remaster of the first three entries in the Spyro the Dragon series, with all three remasters feeling incredibly faithful to the original experiences while updating them in significant ways that make them even better than the originals.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is silly fun; an enjoyable, exciting and vibrant compendium of collect-a-thon platforming classics given a new lease of life. Flaming wonderful.

Although Skylanders was red hot, none of Spyro’s adventures hit the fever-pitch of popularity as his first game, 1998’s Spyro the Dragon. The sequels were also well received, but that first game made him a household name. If you missed out on this wild platformer when it first released, developer Toys for Bob is giving you another chance to see why it is such an important game. This singular adventure fueled Spyro’s fire for decades of games and stories, and after playing it again, I see why developers and publishers believe he remains relevant and is primed for another return.

Toys for Bob has done a great job of filling Spyro’s first three adventures with such reinvigorated life. Worlds are packed to the brim with more detail, animations are consistently endearing, and the quality of life improvements make revisiting these once analog stick-less platformers a joy to play. They’re definitely easier thanks to some of those changes, but no less charming to play. It’s great to see Spyro’s return treated with such love and care, and I hope renewed interest in his past can light the way for his future.

It's hard to believe that the original Spyro the Dragon released 20 years ago but it's great that we have a brand new remastered version of it along with its 2 sequels to celebrate the purple dragon's legacy.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy feels like a game straight out of the late ‘90s because, well, in most ways it is. This could be seen as a good thing, as this type of 3D collectathon has been overall absent from gaming until very recently. In addition, those who grew up with the original trilogy will likely receive a healthy pump of nostalgia from receiving nearly the exact same game they remember from their childhood. This can also be seen as a bad thing, though. Video games have grown since those days, as they have improved and fixed problems that players have since labeled as dated. Overall, thes…

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a wonderful love letter to a classic series, keeping everything that made the original games what they were, but slapping on a fresh coat of paint for the HD era. There are a few creaking bones showing their age here and there, but only due to the developers’ desire to keep things as accurate as possible. The Switch version looks absolutely stunning and runs surprisingly well, so if you’re looking for a classic 3D platforming experience, you should definitely give this a look-in.

I have fond memories of playing Spyro The Dragon on the original Sony Playstation at my neighbor’s house as a kid. But I didn’t own a Sony console until the end of the Playstation 2’s life-cycle, so I missed out on completing a lot of classic Playstation games, including Spyro. Thanks to Spyro Reignited Trilogy, I had the chance return to the childhood I left incomplete.

Perhaps some of the ideas and features presented in Year of the Dragon could be expanded on in a brand new Spyro the Dragon adventure, and it would be interesting to see what developer Toys for Bob could do if it decided to revive the series proper. If nothing else, the studio's excellent work on Spyro: Reignited Trilogy shows the franchise in good hands, and a new game could address some of the poorly-aged elements and other fan complaints, like the the Reignited Trilogy's lack of subtitles.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a faithful recreation of the original three Spyro games for current gen consoles. Toys for Bob was able to get the look and feel of Spyro down while adding a cherry on top bundling it all together and creating a new and improved soundtrack.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a fan’s dream. This heartfelt remake is bursting with colour, character and adventure, even if it has been developed with an cautious approach to reinvention. Though some might find its retro-fused action a little simplistic in this convoluted era of gaming, Spyro has the ability to entertain even the most cynical player with its wonderful worlds, slick design, and ability to spark the flames of nostalgia.

In the end, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a great game whether you played the original ones or not. It reminds us how games used to be and still can be. Maybe this game will bring back the 3D platform games that only Nintendo seems to want to make in 2018. My only complaint with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is that it may be too easy. It is important to remember though, that the PS1 games were geared toward a younger gamer generation and not necessarily hardcore Quake players. The Spyro Reignited Trilogy Retails for $39.99 and is a pretty reasonable price considering you get three full-length games totaling approximately 30-40 hours of gameplay. That is, depending on achievement completion tendencies. My only real question is when does it come out for Nintendo Switch?

Spyro Reignited Trilogy bundles the original three games (Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon) with the same sick burns, same smoldering attitude, now all scaled up in stunning HD.

November 13, 2018 Read Review

My final thoughts, then? Spyro Reignited Trilogy is great for its real target market: young children who have never played these games before. The unadulterated laid-back gameplay found in all three titles will captivate them, as will the bright colours and larger-than-life characters. The trilogy’s other target market – those who fondly remember the games from their youth – are also likely to enjoy it too, though eventually may tire of it once they realise there’s not much depth to it. It’s just collecting things in a range of different scenarios. And if you’ve never played a Spyro game before, you’re even more likely to tire of it pretty quickly. With no pre-existing attachment to its world and characters, it’s a beautiful looking package, but its gameplay just doesn’t engage in the long-term.

Although Spyro the Dragon and its subsequent two sequels haven’t aged as well as one would hope, Toys for Bob has done a good effort to put out a remaster that does the nostalgia justice. Control and design issues were part and parcel to 3D platformers from the era, but while can’t be celebrated except when viewed through an incredibly thick pair of rose-tinted glasses, the overall series remains charming, delightful, and well worth checking out for interest’s sake, if nothing else.

The voicework is great, with Tom Kenny once again proving that he’s one of the most memorable voices in the industry for good reason. The newly-designed dragons’ voices give them much more character as well, as they each feel like their own dragon instead of reskinned clones of the first few dragons. The much-discussed lack of subtitles is an unfortunate downside though, especially with the addition of pre-rendered cutscenes. It seems like such a random thing to exclude from any game with voiced dialogue, so it’s an odd oversight to say the least.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy retains the magic of what made the franchise such a hit in the late 90s and early 2000s. There’s a timelessness that lives in the core of the Spyro games, proving that the franchise can easily contend with other big names in the nostalgia wave. 20 years later, I’m delighted I can still experience the same feeling of wonder and awe in the games that defined my childhood.

There aren't a ton of games that can make a two-decade jump and remain unscathed, but Spyro Reignited Trilogy does just that. While it won't do anything to challenge the status quo of gaming, no one says it has to. This is a game made for you to unwind with and is a great pick-up-and-play game in between more time-intensive titles.
