Super Mega Baseball 2 is a masterpiece. I’ve been playing baseball games since I was a kid and I’ve never fallen as hard for one as I have with this game. The gameplay is nuanced and engrossing for the hardcore baseball game players, while still remaining approachable for newcomers or casual players. The only knock I can dream up is that it doesn’t have the MLB license, which I don’t even really think is that big of an issue because of the bizarrely endearing and large cast as well as the immense customization options. Whether you want to play single games against friends, compete in o…

A great on-field baseball sim with solid online play.

The Super Mega Baseball series is a new one for me, but Super Mega Baseball 2 (SMB2) has a lot going for it. While it doesn’t feature any MLB teams and/or pla

I might have been the only one living under a rock when the critically acclaimed original came out back in 2014, and while I missed out on it, I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity to get my hands on Super Mega Baseball 2. After all, what’s more fun than a low key baseball sim that brings back some sweet Wii Sports memories, minus the exercise?

Super Mega Baseball 2 is an accessible, arcade-style game anyone can enjoy. I hadn’t enjoyed a baseball game myself in a long time, and I tied it to simply not being able to hit the ball while batting. Super Mega Baseball 2 pretty much fixes everything I didn’t like about modern baseball games. I believe even die-hard fans of baseball will still find much to love in this game, as it’s clear that the developer loves baseball as much as any fan.

I was very pleased with the simplistic, fun-to-play nature of Super Mega Baseball 2. The game plays very well with only a few shortcomings and does so for a small amount of bucks. You will not see Mike Trout hitting a home run, but you can have Tony Stark stealing home.

It’s been a long damn time since I dared venture outside of the baseball bubble otherwise known as MLB The Show. I mean, why would you ever want to? It’s the gaming comfort food that never disappoints, no matter how many times you step up to the plate. Plus, when the only other annual option is the disaster-bacle known as R.B.I. Baseball, it is fairly easy to understand why. So imagine my shock to learn that not only is there another baseball game releasing this spring, but that it also had the potential to be legitimately good! Despite sounding like a fictitious game title from an Onion article, Super Mega Baseball 2 ends up making a solid first impression and only improves with time.

My first baseman is named Grunt Manly. Most of my pitchers itch their butts before throwing the ball. My team, the Herbisaurs, is taking on the Sirloins. Super Mega Baseball 2 doesn’t take itself too seriously, but that doesn’t mean you’ll see moonshot home runs or pitches corkscrewing comically to the plate. Despite the goofy setup, developer Metalhead Software delivers a surprisingly authentic baseball simulation that is both competitive and fun.If you played the 2014 series debut of Super Mega Baseball, and the updated Extra Innings version, which released a year later, you know the series is slowly inching closer to realism. The player models, while still looking like they were yanked out of a children’s CG movie, no longer have overly expressive cartoon eyes, and their physiques lose the bobblehead qualities to look more appropriately human. The bats they wield are also slimmed down from the wide size often used by toddlers to smack wiffleballs. The improved player models showcase nice animation touches like waggles in the batter’s box and stretching to catch a ball for a bang-bang play at first. However, the animations for fielding flyballs and grounders are still a bit stiff and slow, meaning they won’t get to everything you think they should. Even with a few balls squeaking by for questionable hits, the balance of play is spot on, usually delivering a similar number of hits, runs, and scoring opportunities you’d see in an MLB game.

Fans of the original Super Mega Baseball will find lots to like about this sequel. New players can expect a solid game of baseball with enough arcade magic to appeal to almost any type of player. Baseball purists will find a good time if they enter with the proper expectations. As it stands right now, Super Mega Baseball 2 is now the top dog of baseball games on the PC. For $30, it’s not quite priced to be an impulse purchase, but should go on the shortlist of any baseball fans or those on the hunt for genuine arcade fun. 8/10 $14 Beers

When it comes to sports games, arcade baseball always provides good times no matter if you're a fan of the sport or not. Super Mega Baseball 2 is a substantial step up from its predecessor but does it knock it out of the park?

Super Mega Baseball 2 is a grounded baseball simulation wrapped in an arcade-style look and feel. An accurate physics engine generates realistic hits, and it keeps stats and models fatigue and morale in interesting ways. This realism is betrayed by a few control issues that affect the timing when batting and an AI that doesn’t always behave as you’d expect. However, the unique Ego system allows you to tweak the difficulty of batting and fielding individually until you find the perfect challenge. And while it lacks the MLB license, you could use the accessible customization tools to recreate the entire MLB if you wanted to.

Super Mega Baseball 2 brings a great amount of arcade fun to this historical sport. With great mechanics and pick up and play gameplay, the game keeps you entertained and engaged. Since there it is not an MLB game you can’t use real players or teams, but that doesn't stop the game from holding up as a respectable title.

The big heads and monster home runs pretty much tell you everything you really need to know about Super Mega Baseball 2. Metalhead’s Software is back with their charming arcade baseball game, this time with more polish and even bigger heads. Under the veneer of a silly over-the-top arcade game, though, lies hidden a deep and enjoyable baseball game that’s easy to play and customizable in ways you can’t get away with in a normal simulation sports game.

You’ve got to give Super Mega Baseball 2 a lot of credit: it manages to find a home on the PlayStation 4 where so many others fail. Stepping up to bat against Sony’s own MLB The Show must be an intimidating prospect, but this likeable arcade outing swings for the fences – and ultimately loads its bases. If you like your sports games to be accessible, then there’s a lot of customisability here to allow you to tailor the title to your specific tastes and needs – but there’s also a surprising degree of depth that elevates it far above the MLB’s own R.B.I. Baseball brand.
