The forced perspective game mechanic alone makes Superliminal an essential buy for those looking for a new first-person puzzler. Both mind-bogglingly clever and hilarious use of environmental storytelling, the potential to be a classic is limited by its short play time and unnecessary exposition.

That being said, Superliminal is still a really solid puzzle game. Its innovative main mechanic is worth the price of admission alone, with Pillow Castle taking the time to evolve and experiment with the feature so no two levels are ever exactly the same. What it lacks in challenge, story, and length it makes up for with its commitment to its perspective-based premise, carving a genuinely fun puzzler that's sure to leave aficionados of the genre satisfied.

As confusing as it is entertaining, Superliminal constantly uses unique mechanics that go against your expectations, even once you've adjusted to what it did last time. It might be short, but it's a genuine delight.

Superliminal is a perspective-focused puzzle game that is equal parts trippy and endearing.

Puzzle games, while being one of my favorite genres, are a dime a dozen these days. Many of them rehash the same ideas over and over, with a new coat of paint to make them seem fresh. This was my fear when I first saw the trailer for Pillow Castle’s Superliminal. It appeared unique, but I’ve been fooled countless times before. Still, the gameplay looked like nothing I’d seen in the past, so I decided to give it try. That was one of the best surprises I’ve had in a while.

Superliminal fails to justify itself or its themes and ends up as a rote puzzle experience you’ll be fine to forget.

“Son of a bitch…” I mutter too loudly under my breath for the 20th time. A smile creeps over my face and I shake my head, grinning. Every time I think I’ve got Superliminal pegged, every time I think I’ve figured it out, it takes another left turn and defies my expectations. Superliminal is never quite what you think it is, and in that, it’s always exactly what it’s trying to be. A puzzle game that is about the adventure more than the puzzles, about how the player comes to the solutions more than the solutions themselves, Superliminal exists somewhere...

Will Superliminal resonate with everyone as much as it did with us? Possibly not, but regardless, if you’re looking for a game in a similar vein to Portal, you’ll be right at home here. It’s pretty short, so if this bothers you, then you might want to pick it up at a discounted price. Otherwise, you’re in for a wholly unique experience that completely stands on its own, and delivers a message that – in 2020, at least – is exceptionally powerful.

Superliminal is the first puzzle game that I’ve played in a long time and I came away from it genuinely wanting more. Everything about it, from its innovative puzzles to its surrealist art style, and even its unusual soundtrack, is exciting. Even when the game floundered, when puzzles weren't clearly laid out or the game's physics engine had a conniption, my annoyance was often quickly replaced with another more positive emotion. I can't stress this enough, as a puzzle game fan or not, Superliminal is more than worth your time.

Superliminal is a short, sweet, but superficial exploration of one the most interesting mechanics to find its way into a puzzle game. It excites with the possibility of what could be, but fails to deliver on the challenges its mechanics beg for.

Still, Superliminal‘s satisfying every time a puzzle clicks. It sounds obvious, but that’s the most redeeming trait a puzzle game can have. Sometimes it’ll take you by surprise, sometimes you’ll train your eye to see it coming. But analyzing a situation, exploring possibilities, and approaching it from unique angles never fails to be rewarding. Is that enough to offset the realization that you’re starting from obtuse and working backward toward logical? It all depends on your perspective.

Superliminal is more like a tour than anything. And again, I'm impressed that its visual tricks work so well - but I just didn't feel all that motivated by either them or the narrative. Its setting worked as an excuse for its reality-warping oddness, but was otherwise squandered. I can remember almost nothing of its script. The twist wasn't what I was expecting, and works well because of that on a meta-level, but it's immediately followed by a moralising conclusion that the story and tone hadn't earned, and which in any other context I would have found deeply patronising.

Superliminal is fun. It may not be challenging, and it might not have a deeper message behind it, but it’s a hell of a ride – and on many levels it’s a technical masterpiece. Actually that description makes it sound like a Marvel film, so I guess that means I can recommend it to pretty much anyone unless you’re Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola.

In theory, dreams exist to relax you. They allow your brain to eject every stray thought and play out stressful scenarios without acting them out in real life. This works just as well, as you probably wouldn’t want to fall off a cliff in real life. However, if you find yourself particularly stressed, not even the calming effect of dreams can get to job done. That’s where therapy can help, and that’s where you find yourself as you dive into the world of SUPERLIMINAL. A first-person puzzler that takes place wholly inside the mind’s eye, you’ll need an open mind...

I don’t want to dump on the game. It’s the product of a small studio working for over half a decade. But at the same time, my husband had to check on me after he heard me shouting at my screen: “Come on, what the fuck” multiple times. Perhaps there’s an angle from which Superliminal is a satisfying, Portal-style thriller, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find that angle. And as the game was so fond of reminding me, perception is reality.

Superliminal has a unique concept for a puzzle game and nice and trippy visuals to accompany it, but alas, that's the majority of what it has going for it. The short length combined with the lack of difficulty and any interesting story means that the game will barely leave an impact on you, and there really isn't any reason to revisit it. And it's a shame, because it starts out impressive, but then the novelty wears off quickly. While it may still be an okay game overall, there are many other first-person puzzlers worth checking out instead which do a...
