This standalone entry into Dontnod’s excellent Life is Strange series packs a serious emotional punch, looks fantastic and more than justifies its price tag of absolutely nothing.
A worthy (and free) successor to Life is Strange, and an intriguing teaser for the full sequel. Dontnod have improved on most accounts and look to draw in new fans with this prologue.
If The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit cost a bit of money, we’d still highly recommend it. The fact that it’s totally free means it’s elevated to a must-play, even if you have no plans on playing Life Is Strange 2 - and if you’re considering it, play this now. Any minor quibbles we might have, like some interactive points not being obvious, drop away when you remember that it’s free.
An endearing vignette in the Life is Strange universe that shows what the series is like when it's at its best.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a short and sweet jaunt through a young boy’s imagination. With simple gameplay but a wide array of puzzles and pieces to discover, you can easily get lost in this game.
Once again Dontnod has crafted a world ripe to explore, as it is set three years after the events of Life is Strange and still within Oregon the world is full of references to the original game, even within this brief pre-release teaser. Fans of the series will play this and find themselves completely relieved of any lingering concerns that they may have had that Max and Chloe are no longer the focus of the series, with Captain Spirit proving the Life is Strange universe – and Dontnod’s on mastery over this kind of storytelling – is bigger then just the original protagonists.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit review: "Completely free to download, and a wonderful couple of hours of gaming"
Have you ever dreamt of being a superhero? Meet Chris, a creative and imaginative 10-year-old boy who escapes reality with fantastical adventures as his alter ego, the Awesome Captain Spirit!
Video games are often described within the context of escapism, immersing players in wondrous worlds and putting them at the center of epic quests. From that angle, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is relatively mundane; it’s set in a plain house on a regular Saturday morning, and stars a typical kid obsessed with superheroes, robots, and dinosaurs. Even so, the concept of taking refuge in fantasy is the compelling core of this sad and powerful story, which is partially about the places we escape to, but even more about the situations we escape from.
If you are coming into this game without an inkling of what to expect, the opening moments alone will absolutely throttle you right in the feels. The cinematography, the music choice, the entire presentation speaks to the skill Dontnod has when it comes to a gripping narrative – as if we didn’t already know that from Life is Strange. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (Shortened for this review to Captain Spirit) is an incredibly sobering examination of humanity and childhood innocence in its purest form.
There’s something almost magical in the air on Saturday mornings. The world feels fresher, the sun brighter and the people happier. Perhaps it’s a hang up from the days of our youth when the industrious weekend was the time our dreams would come true. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a snapshot of the intangible magic and the tragedy that so easily hides behind it.
Dontnod didn’t necessarily need to make The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, but I’m really glad that it did. The role of Chris in Life is Strange 2 can only be speculated, but if he turns out to be an important figure than this short title gives us a more readily available connection to him. And even if he’s only a passing character we still get the feeling of a more realised world that Dontnod has created.
A short but - most importantly - free episode taster for the upcoming Life is Strange 2, the adventures of Captain Spirit appear that they'll indeed, be awesome.
As always, it’s the little moments that allow the Life Is Strange universe to truly come to life. Whether it’s piecing together a tragic backstory from Chris’ imaginative playground, or letting him lie down on his dad’s bed while he listens to one of his mom’s old records, Dontnod Entertainment manages to use these smaller scenes to create a world that feels believable and relatable. Despite being a spin-off of sorts and an introduction to Life Is Strange 2, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit still succeeds in drawing players into the charming and mundane nature of everyday life through a realistic portrayal of a troubled youth.
[The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is] a fun adventure with an emotional narrative, interesting characters and relationships.
Strong characters and environmental storytelling make The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit enjoyable overall. Despite the main objectives being underwhelming and the decisions seeming weightless, I became invested in the outcome of the story thanks to Chris’ lovable sense of wonder against a well-painted dreary backdrop. Captain Spirit makes me optimistic about what's to come in Life is Strange 2.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit functionally serves as a playable teaser for the sequel to Life is Strange. Because of this, we never get real resolution to Chris’ story. It ends on a gratuitous cliffhanger, and that’s so predictably frustrating. But Captain Spirit uses its two hours well to craft a narrative that leaves us wanting more. That was the whole point. Chris may be a superhero but he’s also an underdog. Everyone loves a good underdog story.
Because most of Captain Spirit’s spirit (sorry) is experienced through discovering the narratives, any theories that popped up from playing the game will be featured in a future article. It’s more fun that way for everyone! All I can say is that Captain Spirit is absolutely worth your time, and it’s *free*, so there are no excuses not to play it.
Billed as a prequel to the forthcoming Life is Strange 2, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a short two-hour experience where players will take on the role of Chris, a 10-year old with an incredible imagination.
