The Golf Club 2 Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

The Golf Club 2 improves on the original in every way, and most importantly it plays a fantastic game of golf. It’s a shame then that there are still some technical hiccups, as they do take some of the sheen away from it, but I don’t doubt that HB Studios will continue to improve on what has clearly been a labour of love, and one which shows that sports game development isn’t solely in the realms of the biggest publishers.

The Golf Club 2 will entice you with easy to learn gameplay but will hook you with aiming for the perfect shot!

The more you practice The Golf Club 2019, the better you’ll get. Not only will you feel better once you hit the links, but you might also find yourself competent and skilled enough to actually finish (and hopefully win!) an entire round! From there, the rest is history. The Golf Club 2019 is a winner in my book and certainly a game that fans of golf sims and realistic sports games will treasure for years to come.

Aiming to build the strongest, most accessible golf game so far, The Golf Club 2 offers multiplayer features, a new Career mode, and limitless customization, allowing players to rise to fame in a vibrant, virtual golfing community.

Hits harder with more accuracy, but the ball still occasionally ends up in the rough.

It’s been almost three years since The Golf Club bagged up its 9 iron and plotted a course for the user created links of the PlayStation 4. HB Studios’ simulation resembled a present day Tiger Woods: a little rough around the edges but still capable of magic. This sequel, then, aims to improve upon the handicap of its predecessor by expanding on all of its features – but does it hit an eagle or a hole in one?

In general, I like what The Golf Club 2 has to offer. It is a really solid representation of the sport both in terms of mechanics and the overall aesthetics. Because of the course editor, you have a plethora of options you can use to create the course of your dreams, or just play those made by other people. The possibilities are limitless. However, some technical issues still linger and the career mode could use some additional depth as The Golf Club takes some small steps in the right direction.

It’s not all bad though. The option to create your own courses in The Golf Club 2 is a nice touch, and that, along with being able to play any user-created course means there’s practically an unlimited amount of courses. That’s great news for those who do enjoy its convoluted options and somewhat frustrating gameplay. If you’re a golf aficionado and enjoy teaming up with others, then The Golf Club 2 is likely to satiate your needs from a golfing game. If you’re something of a casual amateur however, you’re very unlikely to gleam much enjoyment from it. Do yourself a favour and stick to PGA.

The Golf Club 2 could have been a non-sponsored, better priced game as an alternative to the full-pro games out there, but it really needs a good shakedown to be a valid option. A better swing system, a better putting system, and an overall touch-up to the aesthetics (crowd, graphics issues, player) would make this a viable alternative to sponsored games costing 20-30 dollars more but have a fancy name on the cover.

Golf is really targeted towards such a specific demographic of people. To make them more appealing to a wider audience, video games that capture the sport more often take a more cartoon-ish route, with simplified, accessible gameplay. The only exception to that rule has previously been the EA franchise (formerly Tiger Woods and most recently Rory McGilroy), but with no EA Sports golf game in the coming months, the fairway is clear and sunny days are ahead for The Golf Club 2 to take charge.
