For the first time since The Legend of Zelda’s inception in 1986, the series’ namesake is finally the playable protagonist. Echoes of Wisdom is not a spin-off or a non-canon entry in the ongoing legend but rather a proper Zelda game filled with dungeons and puzzles. Getting to explore a version of Hyrule as Zelda is overdue, and efforts have been made to make sure it retains the feeling of a Zelda game, while undeniably trying something new. Echoes lacks the scale and grandeur of previous...

I’ll be honest: when The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was first announced, my initial reaction wasn’t the “oh boy, a brand new Zelda!!” burst of excitement you’d expect from such a momentous announcement, but more of a “this looks like a rushed reuse of assets” scoff, due to how uneventful Nintendo’s own reveal felt like. To be fair, my initial statement was quite unfair, as my favorite Zelda game of all time, Majora’s Mask, was exactly that, a rushed reuse of Ocarina o...

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom flips the script, putting the fate of Hyrule on Princess Zelda’s shoulders. While the game offers a vast world to explore with charming visuals and music, it suffers from repetitive gameplay elements, as many challenges can be overcome with the same few Echoes, though it still provides enjoyable moments of creativity and discovery.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a triumph of both style and storytelling. Princess Zelda feels like a true protagonist and doesn’t simply “take Link’s place” in the adventure. The creativity of the “Echoes” system is wonderfully done for the most part, and most will definitely want a new adventure of this nature in the future.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom twists the typical Zelda formula while still staying true to the franchise. It is a truly innovative experience that Nintendo will hopefully continue to explore in future entries.

Echoes of Wisdom brings the spark of the latest games, but also dives deeper into the ethos of the old games with its use of dungeons. While the regions are the same, there's a new life that's presented in this that nails the aspect of refreshing the franchise in a way that isn’t a total reset. The game delivers on bringing those two elements together and valuing the series. While it isn’t perfect, it goes without saying that the game is impressive and reels you in right at the start and will make you want more after the credits begin...

In her first main series starring role, Princess Zelda has a lot to live up to, but Echoes of Wisdom is the kind of Zelda game you’d expect in style, substance, and quality.

Echoes of Wisdom is a great maiden adventure for the franchise's eponymous princess, marrying old and new convincingly, and setting up a foundation for 2D Zelda games to thrive alongside their bigger 3D cousins.

Echoes of Wisdom does a good job setting up Zelda with fun and creative powers and a vast and adorable world to save. Echoes add fun creativity to puzzle solving, though do also have a tendency to break the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom puts a new spin on the series’ formula but never quite finds itself. I like coming up with creative ways to use as bed as much as the next person, but I’d prefer if the challenges were more consistently creative in return. Instead, things just bled together until I could have just played on autopilot. It takes more than a dress and a bed to keep things interesting.
Read Full ReviewIt’s been a big year for Nintendo princesses. First Mario was given the day off as Peach quite literally took the stage in her first solo game for years, and now it’s Zelda’s turn. Despite having an entire series named after her, the princess of Hyrule has never been the playable protagonist – but that changes in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
Read Full ReviewEchoes of Wisdom proves that even after nearly 40 years, The Legend of Zelda still has room to surprise us. Finally giving Princess Zelda the spotlight is a major shakeup on its own, and the game’s inventive new mechanics show that even after Breath of the Wild, top-down Zelda games have plenty of new ground left to cover. While it doesn’t fully commit to its best mechanical ideas or its newfound heroine’s ability to lead her own game, Echoes of Wisdom feels like the Zelda-fronted game I’ve been waiting decades for. I only hope this isn’t her last turn as...

It’s been a long time coming, but finally a Legend of Zelda game is a legend ABOUT Zelda. Long-standing jokes about the name of the franchise aside, Link has always been the star of the show, and the “legend” about Zelda was mostly that she needed help getting out of various bad situations. Not so in The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, though – this time it’s Link who’s been lost in the line of duty, and the spotlight shifts solely to the Princess of Hyrule to save the day.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a bold new take on the longstanding series in which Zelda creates echoes of monsters, boxes, beds, and much more. This is the first time Zelda has stepped into the leading role; no, we don't count Zelda's Adventure for CD-i.

The princess kneels on the cold stone floor, colour slowly returning to her. The hooded man, sheathing his bow after shattering the last remains of her prison, wordlessly turns to her and holds out a kind hand. Before the princess can grasp it, a jagged chasm of shadow tears through the very fabric of the world and snatches up the hooded man. Scrambling to her feet, the princess springs back from the void and flees its encroaching grasp. She must warn the kingdom. She must save Hyrule.

Thanks to playful puzzles and an imaginative reinvention of Hyrule's historic iconography, Echoes of Wisdom emerges as a bold and creative new chapter in Zelda's legend.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a charming follow-up to Link's Awakening that builds on that game’s beautiful aesthetic while introducing just enough new mechanics to feel truly distinct. The dubious performance and repetitive combat can drag, but this is largely an excellent adventure throughout.
