As a remaster, this updated version of The Wonderful 101 is not going to impress anyone with its minor improvements to performance and small adjustments to make it a bit more accessible to newcomers. However, the fact remains that this is The Wonderful 101, one of the best action games of a generation, and one that has tragically – until now – been locked on a relatively niche console. This remaster is the best way to play The Wonderful 101, which is something that I can’t recommend strongly enough, for those willing to power through its learning curve.
The Wonderful 101 is a Platinum Action Game. Just when I was getting used to running around the city streets saving people and defeating mechanized alien monsters, I am flying through the skies, shooting down a giant robot, then forming a giant hammer to slam down upon alien ships ravaging the skies, then jumping through the burning wreckage, commandeering a ship and engaging in aerial combat, leaping from the burning ship as it explodes, and dealing the final blow with a giant fist. The Wonderful 101 is non-stop, exciting, intense, and spectacular. The Wonderful 101 is a Platinum Action Game.
It's awesome that there are so many Wii U classics coming back so here's PlatinumGames' fun-filled The Wonderful 101: Remastered.
The Wonderful 101 deserves this new Remastered lease on life after the way it was treated on the Wii U. For nearly seven years we’ve clamored for a re-release, and now we have it. Go play it this time.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered is a creative adventure full of amazing boss fights and dynamic events. The boss fights are thrilling cinematic encounters that test your skills in a multitude of ways and the game constantly changes in such a vibrant way that it's hard to predict what will happen next. However, between all those moments of joy are times of vexation as you learn the game's mechanics. Trying to quickly draw weapons in time-sensitive situations that often lead to you doing it again and again until the game recognizes that pattern. That or fighting the game's camera on everything. The Wonderful 101 has a lot of great elements but there is plenty of vexing moments holding this overwise great game back.
The Wonderful 101 is not for everybody, and while the Wii U didn’t really do it any favors, I think it’s initial reception was proof of that. But time has passed, tastes change, word of mouth spreads, and appreciation grows. So maybe, with The Wonderful 101: Remastered, “not for everybody” includes at least a few more people this time.
Earth is under attack by enormous aliens, and the only thing that can protect the planet is a group of unlikely, mighty heroes with special abilities. The aliens are too powerful for the heroes to fight individually, so they must join forces and work together to defeat the common enemy.
The Wonderful 101 was one of the gaming highlights of 2013, mixing quirky characters and a fun comic book superhero style presentation with frenetic action that PlatinumGames are known for. You might not know this however, as the game launched exclusively on the Wii U, a platform that really didn’t have the install base to give niche titles like this one the mainstream credit they deserved. Now, The Wonderful 101 Remastered breathes new life into this crazy fun action game, now available on...
If you missed out on it during the Wii U cycle, there has never been a better time to unite in the deeply flawed yet ceaselessly delightful world of The Wonderful 101: Remastered.
The Wonderful 101 is a genuine treasure, this remaster bringing its quirky action gameplay and effortless charms to more people than ever before. It certainly looks the part, and is an easy buy for PlatinumGames fans, but the awkwardness of bringing the game’s dual-screen UI to single screen systems means the Wii U is still the best place to play.
It's wonderful to see these stranded Wii U heroes find a home on the Switch, but The Wonderful 101: Remastered is swarming with imperfections.
I wish I loved The Wonderful 101. It’s absolutely oozing in style that leaves me grinning ear to ear, and I always wanted to see what was coming next. The problem was that the process of actually seeing what came next was a dreadful slog that just frustrated me more and more as the game went on. It feels like a game made for the most dedicated of Platinum Games fans, and I’m certain that anyone who loves racking up combos as quickly as possible for platinum medals will love this game. Diehard fans of character action games will have a lot to love here, but everyone else will have to put up…
Back in 2013, The Wonderful 101 was a flawed game, but one with some really good ideas. It's still that in 2020- but seven years later, I was hoping it would be a lot more.
Sony’s own DualShock 4 controller comes in multiple colors: some pretty, some garish, some meant to resemble a certain bodily fluid.
Not one of Platinum's best, but The Wonderful 101 wins you round via its writing, music and sense of joy.
