Theatrhythm Final Bar Line scratches a particular itch, which means the game is unlikely to hold a great deal of immediate appeal for people who aren’t already familiar with the Final Fantasy series. That franchise has produced some amazing music over the years, though, and the fans who already love it will likely welcome a fresh excuse to listen to some of their favorite compositions once again. The combination of music and visual assets could also help franchise newcomers see what they’ve been missing. A little more variety in the compositions included would have been nice, but otherwise, the package...

Theatrythm Final Bar Line is a good celebration of Final Fantasy’s musical history. While a few key songs are behind a paywall or missing entirely, fans will find a lot to like here.

P.S. As a collection of music from all across the series, it’s only natural that you’ll run into spoilers for these games. If for some reason you’ve been still holding off that playthrough of Final Fantasy IV, IX, XI, and the like I highly encourage you to stop browsing social media and get on that, stat.

Rhythm games are cool and all, but what if they had RPG elements? Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is here to answer this question. It turns out rhythm games get much cooler when you add this one little twist to the formula. While it’s already fun to practice and eventually master songs, having quests to complete is somehow even better. My first foray into the Theatrhythm series has totally sold me on the formula.

The Theatrhythm series has been a standout, if criminally underplayed, example of how to both showcase a series’ excellent set of scores while celebrating a prolific franchise’s history. Since the previous entry’s release on 3DS in 2014, Final Fantasy music has evolved thanks to the releases of Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy XIV expansions, remakes, and more. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line folds these additions into a mix of returning classics and lesser-known tunes to create an amazing catalog of songs to play through in the series’ trademark take on the rhythm genre.

An incredible celebration of the series from across the years, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a must-play for any Final Fantasy fan. Beautifully presented with multiple modes and potentially endless gameplay, this is one of the best rhythm games you could possibly own. It’s an absolute joy to play – just as tapping along to the Golden Saucer’s theme tune, or Balamb Garden’s theme should be.

I have been playing video games for more than three decades now, and the effect games have on me comes and goes. There are titles that positively captivate my attention with ideas and presentation, and ones that simply raise an eyebrow in terms of tenacity and innovation. There are games that have bored me to tears, deeply disturbed me, and generally offended my sensibilities through good taste and social climate. But for me, and for many people my age (I imagine), there’s never quite been ...

Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line is the epic compilation that Final Fantasy music aficionados have been waiting for. Including close to 400 tracks from across Square Enix’s RPG series and spin-offs, the game is the ultimate dose of Final Fantasy musical nostalgia and a fine rhythm game all on its own. Just don’t go into the experience looking for much more than that.

Every Final Fantasy game is enhanced by its association with Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, because every Final Fantasy soundtrack is given definition and thus made more beautiful. As I’ve been playing Theatrhythm, I’ve been going back and revisiting some of my less-beloved Final Fantasy games — I won’t name them here for fear of inciting war — and I sincerely appreciate those games more now. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a testament to the power of a soundtrack, and it’s well worth the attention of any fan of Final Fantasy, music, or Final Fantasy music.

There's also a problem with gameplay repetition, although anyone familiar with Theatrhythm or rhythm games likely already know what they're getting into. Theatrhythm titles have always been hard to put down, but perhaps because there's so much offered here, Theatrhtyhm Final Bar Line sometimes overstays its welcome. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is a lot of fun, but aside from adding more content, it still feels fairly interchangeable with other Theatrhythm games. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially for anyone who loves the series already or who may be checking it out for the first time, but people who played...
