The origin story of the sleek, sultry, ass-kicking Lady Croft has been in need of telling since we were first introduced to the short shorts wearing tomb raider over a decade ago. As fun as it’s been travelling to ancient ruins across the globe taking down hordes of hunters, mercenaries and the supernatural, the reasons behind the fearless femme fatale have been unknown to us – until now.  As someone who is generally unenthusiastic towards reboots, I have to say my jaw dropped when the Tomb Raider trailer was unveiled at E3 two years ago. It just made sense, given the recent trend in humanizin...

Tomb Raider is a fantastic addition to the Croft catalog and a fine rebirth of a classic character. With a great story, sumptuous visuals and meaty combat, this is one game you can't afford to miss out on in 2013.

Crystal Dynamic does a wonderful job with the new Tomb Raider.

Like the many successful origin stories of contemporary film franchises — Batman (with the Dark Knight Trilogy), Iron Man, Star Trek and even James Bond (with Skyfall or Casino Royale) — Tomb Raider grasps the notion that with great risk comes great pliability. The reward only comes after molding a character (or characters) who reconciles with their frailties and emerges from adversity both stronger and more sincere. Lara Croft achieves this by paralleling her eager discovery of Yamatai to her earnest discovery of self. Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are justified in calling Tomb Raider a re...

Tomb Raider could so easily have gone wrong, and its opening gambit looks like it’s heading down a most erroneous path. It starts off with some ambushing QTEs and absolutely pummels Lara Croft into the dirt to such a degree, you’d almost suspect the developers were getting off on it. This first impression is an awkward obfuscation, however, one that soon erodes to reveal a savvy, thoughtful, and above all, immensely enjoyable game. In fact, I’m happy to go on record as saying this is the best Tomb Raider game I’ve played. Tightly produced, competent in both its puzzling and its combat, this is...

Mar 5, 2013 Read Review

It’s a shame to see the trend of poor game-to-movie adaptations continue with a character as great as Lara Croft. In this new Tomb Raider origin story, Lara’s singular drive to find her father falls flat because their relationship isn’t interesting, and that failure is compounded by a lackluster story and characters. The MMA-style fight scenes and her more adventurous action sequences do give Alicia Vikander a great chance to show off her physical prowess, but without a convincing motive, Lara comes across as shallow. A few interesting puzzles and death traps are too little, too late to save T...
