XCOM 2: War of the Chosen Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

War of the Chosen is an incredibly compelling reason to return to XCOM 2.  Adding both depth in strategy and new content for the game, anyone who enjoyed XCOM 2 will most certainly enjoy this excellent expansion.

“'XCOM 2: War of the Chosen' somehow makes one of our favorite games of 2016 even better.”

Firaxis’ alien-blasting strategy game is so finely balanced that if the developer pushed too hard on any of its systems the whole game could completely break. This existing complexity makes XCOM 2’s War of the Chosen expansion feel like a magic trick, because Firaxis adds nearly a game’s worth of new content into the existing framework without compromising any of its mechanics. XCOM’s strategy has never been richer.

Ultimately, XCOM 2: War of the Chosen buries even the most tactically-sound gamer under a mountain of entertaining challenges and adds not only several hours of content to play through, but well-neigh infinite replayability as well - we can't wait to restart the fight and see how a new batch of soldiers fares against the ADVENT government. Firaxis Games has introduced a veritable mountain of new enemies and experiences to take in, greatly refreshing what was already a deep strategy title with a steep learning curve. With so many layers of new content and carefully balanced gameplay, War of the...

For those new to the XCOM series, I would definitely recommend including War of the Chosen with your first play through of XCOM 2 as it deepens the total experience and breaks up any monotony that was in the vanilla version. I have about another 30 hours until I manage to beat the expansion, but I know that when I do I’ll immediately start up a new game to experience it all over again.

War of the Chosen is a wide and deep expansion for XCOM 2 that improves variety in mission objectives, tactical options, threats, and strategic map activities. The Chosen are worthy adversaries who advance along with you to put up great fights without feeling cheap, and the new elite soldier classes add opportunities for interesting gameplay earlier in the campaign. Some significant balance issues show up, but especially for the first two-thirds of a campaign War of the Chosen restores the fear of the unknown to a game I know well.

The aliens strike back.

War of the Chosen adds a significant amount of content to XCOM 2, enough to make it feel like a whole new game. It's exciting to see your soldiers grow and fight new enemies that are simultaneously growing and fighting your soldiers. New enemies, new game mechanics, new troops, and new ways of making sure the aliens get off your planet.

While War of the Chosen is an excellent game, we simply can’t recommend it on consoles at this time. Its failures make an already long game longer, and detract from Firaxis’ exceptional work.

There's a raft of smaller, more under-the-hood changes I've not even mentioned, but all of which further serve to ensure your campaign does not stomp down the same path every time. It's even cranked the graphicsosity dial up a little too, with improved lighting making everything pop that much more.

If you’ve never played XCOM 2, here’s my advice: Skip the vanilla version and start by playing the new expansion, War of the Chosen. It’s the best 2K’s XCOM series has ever been.
