Some fighting games take themselves too seriously, but others? They put you in control of a giant panda, then let you square off against a demon on top of an active volcano.

There were difficult games before Dark Souls came along. At least I think there were. It’s all a bit of a blur.

When it arrived in 2014, Guilty Gear Xrd was a fighting game Forerro Rocher, after a decade spent slumming it on stale Dairy Milk. It would have been rude not to go back for a second mouthful when Revelator showed up last year.

DC’s comic creations regularly end up in second place to Marvel at the cinema box office – but when it comes to games, Batman and his super-powered squad mates consistently annihilate the Avengers.

Not to fighting game fans. To us, they’re the unmistakable sounds of Street Fighter. You couldn’t step foot in an arcade back in the nineties without spotting one of Capcom’s cabinets – usually with a line of players waiting for their turn at the joystick.

Since making the leap up to Xbox One, Forza’s open-world Horizon spinoffs have handily surpassed the more serious Motorsport originals.
