Octopath Traveler Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Octopath Traveler 2 is a gorgeous JRPG that improves on the original in almost every way. And it is a blast to play on Steam Deck!
Octopath Traveler 2, like its predecessor, is a throwback to the golden age of the JRPG. It relies on the tried and true formula we were so fond of in the 90s and gives it a modern facelift. One would think that’d result in a relatively niche game, but the original did surprisingly well, and this is more of a good thing.
With an engaging battle system, deeply customizable job system, and beautiful visuals and graphics, Octopath Traveler has a lot of wonderful parts. Does the total game exceed the sum of those parts or somehow fall short?
Octopath Traveler is one of the best RPGs this generation. Providing a traditional formula for modern audiences without making any sacrifices. You'll still have to endure random encounters and lots of grinding, especially with the absence of an experience share option, but these are systems that RPG fans love. Octopath Traveler is a game for RPG fans that provides 8 outstanding campaigns that'll keep you hooked from start to finish.
It's hard to imagine it going down as anything other than a true classic.Octopath Traveler is the newest RPG from Square Enix, a developer held in legendary regard mainly because of [...]
Octopath Traveler strays from the path of expectations. In taking the road less traveled, it becomes a journey that all should experience for themselves.
Octopath Traveler is an all around enjoyable, nostalgic romp with some nice modern touches. While enjoyment of the storytelling will likely vary from character to character and from player to player, this retro-modern title is filled with sidequests, great music, slightly-hidden team banter, and a gorgeous new approach to pixel art, and is a must-play for any lover of old school JRPGs.
Octopath Traveler is truly a charming and wonderful J-RPG that has reminded me that there's still a place for old classics. Some might call it dated, I'd call it ageless and even peerless when held up against a recent generation of watered down, Westernised role-playing games. Square Enix delivers a nuanced, tactical game and an endearing cast to boot.
When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
This neo-retro JRPG is frustratingly close to something special.
For those who have never played an Octopath Traveler, there are threads in the first game that get tugged on gently in Octopath 2 and much more strongly in Octopath 0. It’s a satisfying turn-based RPG in its own right, and I thoroughly enjoyed it back in 2018, but if you are only planning to play one or two of these games, the sequel and prequel are the better options than the debut. If you’re down for everything under the RPG sun, Octopath Traveler is worth the price of admission, but maybe not if you’ve already played it elsewhere.
