Octopath Traveler 2 is a gorgeous JRPG that improves on the original in almost every way. And it is a blast to play on Steam Deck!

Octopath Traveler 2, like its predecessor, is a throwback to the golden age of the JRPG. It relies on the tried and true formula we were so fond of in the 90s and gives it a modern facelift. One would think that’d result in a relatively niche game, but the original did surprisingly well, and this is more of a good thing.

With an engaging battle system, deeply customizable job system, and beautiful visuals and graphics, Octopath Traveler has a lot of wonderful parts. Does the total game exceed the sum of those parts or somehow fall short?

This neo-retro JRPG is frustratingly close to something special.

Octopath Traveler is an all around enjoyable, nostalgic romp with some nice modern touches. While enjoyment of the storytelling will likely vary from character to character and from player to player, this retro-modern title is filled with sidequests, great music, slightly-hidden team banter, and a gorgeous new approach to pixel art, and is a must-play for any lover of old school JRPGs.

Octopath Traveler strays from the path of expectations. In taking the road less traveled, it becomes a journey that all should experience for themselves.

Octopath Traveler is a must-have game on the Nintendo Switch for both RPG fans and fans of great games. It’s not a perfect RPG, but it’s definitely one of the best ones of recent memory.

Octopath Traveler is a wonderful collection of adventures and stories, but the quirk of storytelling that lends it its name is both its greatest strength and weakness. While the turn-based combat and ‘breaking’ enemies makes practically every battle engaging, the eight tales this game tells don’t really feel like they need to be told together. It’s a little unbalanced because of this, but this remains a charming, beguiling JRPG.

Despite being a big JRPG fan, I don't have any nostalgia for that SNES era of RPGs. Sadly, I never owned a SNES at the time, and revisiting the games in later years isn't quite the same. I've always admired detailed sprite artwork, but never really felt a pang of nostalgia when playing those 16-bit throwback titles. And yet, when I saw footage of Octopath Traveler, I couldn't help be excited. The classic 16-bit art style was reimagined for a modern era, and I couldn't be more on board.

At its best, Octopath Traveler reminds me of my favorite 16-bit role-playing games. Strategic turn-based combat tests your skills, a job system gives you the freedom to tinker and optimize, and a fantastic retro aesthetic brings the world and creatures to life. However, Octopath Traveler isn’t always at its best. Over the course of its 60-plus hours, the adventure has wild variations in pacing and narrative, and has trouble settling into a groove. The result is a series of tantalizing highs and brutal lows, with the highs ultimately winning out.

Octopath Traveler is a small triumph in that it mostly delivers on its promise to give us eight stories worth seeing through. None of them push the envelope in any way, and several drag, but that’s not a huge issue when you have so many to choose from. Even if you skip one or several tales altogether you’re still going to get a handful of RPG goodness.

A fantastic balancing act between old and new, creating a Japanese role-player that’s full of charm, innovative ideas, and clever nods to the past.

Octopath Traveler is a JRPG dream come true. Both its battle system and aesthetic pay loving tribute to the Super NES era while moving the formula forward in exciting and novel ways. This isn’t merely a modern retread of past classics, but a phenomenal homage with genuinely fresh ideas in a fantastically charming wrapper of old-school meets new. While the eight different character stories could’ve used a little more connection between them, I’m looking forward to going back to complete them all, explore the many side areas, battle optional bosses, and unlock the final job classes.

Octopath Traveler is a special RPG, the kind of game that keeps an eye on the past while walking bravely into the future. Indeed, we’d even go so far as to say this is the best RPG you can find on the Switch to date, all elements of this game link together perfectly to make for a harmonious and immersing experience that you’ll find difficult to put down. We’d recommend Octopath Traveler to both fans and newcomers of RPGs; the game does a fantastic job of straddling that line of accessibility and depth, satisfying both camps with its dizzying amount...

Octopath Traveler follows the proud tradition of Bravely Default, Chrono Trigger and most of the Kingdom Hearts sequels of being an excellent Japanese RPG with a very weird name. The title does make sense, I guess: the game has eight story “paths”, and the player is certainly “travelling” them as they play. However, anyone turned off by the somewhat awkward title should relax; this game is pretty great.

Octopath Traveler is an excellent game, but the elasticity of its structure proves to be the one unassailable hurdle between it and becoming a classic in its own right.

Octopath Traveler has rekindled a sense of fondness that I haven’t felt in JRPGs since I completed Persona 4 for the very first time. You know the feeling —that wonderful sentiment of adventure and mystery as you embark on a journey with a group of friends, resolving major problems together (maybe not so much “together” in this case, though), and finally being left with a bittersweet longing when everything comes to a close. And when you’ve got a killer soundtrack that hits all the right emotional beats to go along with it, you know you’ve got a winner here.
