Unfortunately, the intrigue of the story isn’t going to be enough to draw in people who’ve dismissed the series in the past. Despite the plot taking itself much more seriously, Burst Re:Newal is still a Senran Kagura game, which means it still revels in giant bouncing breasts and panty shots.
The new additions here, especially the integration of a brand new character, definitely make this Definitive Edition worth playing for those who have already played the original. For newcomers, this release is the perfect opportunity to jump into what many (including myself) consider one of the best games in the series.
Gris
Gris sets a new standard in the relatively young artistic platformer genre, and I am extremely excited to see what Nomada Studio does next. This game is an absolute must-play, and I truly hope that anyone who does will be able to see just how special this title is.
IO Interactive appears to have plans to support Hitman 2 as a platform as well, with its first timed exclusive mission to kill Sean Bean coming available shortly before this review was published. I look forward to seeing what else the developers release, and I imagine it’ll keep me coming...
When talking about this game, Fujii told us, “I don’t expect some player sitting in the dark with pop and chips alone in front of the TV, swinging the Joycons, thinking, ‘Hey, I can’t do this,’ or thinking, ‘Hey, stupid game, it doesn’t detect my beat!’” While this is the...
Fortunately, two of those three complaints vanish once you put some time in, and you’ll have no trouble with that what with everything else available to do. This is the rare review title that I can see myself regularly coming back to in the future. Despite not being a car...
Aside from all of that, what Reflexions is really missing is the charm that’s present in most Senran Kagura games. The crazy characters and their interactions, along with the over-the-top sexual humor, is one of the major things that has kept me coming back to the franchise. That’s all missing...
As it stands, though, Mothergunship is still a game worth a look. The gun customization, even with the limitations the levels impose, is still a blast to play around with. The character interactions are also a cherry on top, adding a spark of charm that games like this really need...
What we have here is the video game equivalent of plain yogurt. There’s nothing really notable about it, but it’s perfectly edible and gets the job done if you’re hungry. If you’re really in the need to get your JRPG fix, there’s much worse you can play than Refrain. If...
Between that, the repetitive environments, and a plot that requires background knowledge in the series, this is by no means a perfect game, or even one of the best shooters I’ve played. It is, however, just a plain fun time and a good challenge to boot.
Scoring this game strictly as its own release, without any relation to its predecessor, this game could easily be an 8/10. However, knowing that I can pick up the original and get essentially the same experience, on the same console, at half the price, knocks a point off.
It feels like Inti Creates wanted to shave the rough edges off of the franchise, but went way too far and scraped off some of the core that made previous entries so fun to play. If you’re a fan of the series, I’d definitely hold out for a discount.
